Good investigation. I had the same problem on my Paralenz camera earlier this year. The magnets need to be rinsed well after each dive. But it's hard to get rinse water down in there.

That trim piece does not seal out water from the inside of the housing. It does however hold the glass window in-place, along with the window's seals. I don't think you'll have a leak due to that crack in the trim.

The red light is nice for stills. You can use it to help autofocus in dim/dark conditions with less likelihood of spooking the fish. Then your flash or strobe will light up the scene for the shot.

You may also be able to trim some "rubber" from the pocket where it hits the top of your foot. I did it to some Atomic fin that were bothering me. I think I used a Dremel tool. Make sure the trim is smooth, especially no sharp internal corners that could start a tear.
