Is exactly what you do, having a boltsnap tied to the SPG clipped on the left d-ring on the harness (at hip level). There are some people that have their hose short enough to be as more streamlined possible, so sometimes is far more pratical to unclip (you do not need to look at it to unclip)...

Why not a boltsnap as in the hogarthian rig? For more reason you don't read at it very often, you should not bothered by unclipping.

If you want absolutely have both on the left side you can use an high pressure port adapter that provides 2 exits. Xs scuba has a couple of them. Optionally you can search for a short hp hose (20-25 cm) that are flexible enough to do the U-turn (they are often kept in the U shape using bungee...

I was diving the area at the beginning of January and I found the dives are very easy. I was with Khao Lak Dive Adventures. No special certification needed (OW is enough) but you can have Nitrox if you want, provided you are certified for it. Never been there on March, so I cannot do any comparison.
