New diver who's caught the bug

Hey TooManyHobbies. I live in Austin, TX but my customer is MDTA in Baltimore. Last Friday I was stuck in BWI for 11 hours, and I was thinking I could just stay into the weekend. If there's diving available nearby, I may bring my gear next time (fly Southwest, so it'll be free!).

    Greetings!

Hi Scott. I've been diving for awhile and also decided to finally get active here. Where are you diving?

    What made you go pro?

My wife. She got certified 19 years after me but then became a bigger SCUBA nut. I encouraged her to be a Rescue Diver, and she encouraged me to become a DM. We both really enjoy it. We're both tips-only volunteer DMs for classes here in Central Texas and barely break even on costs vs tips...

    Balmorhea pool closed for repairs

The TPWD Game Wardens are also perennially underfunded, which is why us volunteers from the Texas Maritime Regiment was supplementing them on area lakes and on their dive team. Working with their dive team (at the time 9 guys to cover the entire state!) was a wonderful experience.

    Dive Master gear set up

I've had instructors do the same with my gear so good point. I also frequently use extra gear with students (long-hose octo instead of Air2 to share during safety stop for students low on air, steel 100 cuft instead of Al 80s so I can chase students all over, sometimes weight belt I can clip on...

    Dive Master gear set up

I agree with those above, my shop wants me to be sporting their gear when I DM their classes, which makes sense - but it's not as PADI standards thing. Edit: I've worn all kinds of gear while DMing, FFM, dry suit, donut BCD, pony, etc., that the students weren't wearing. (Didn't wear the FFM...

Texas Gulf Coast dive operator list

Thanks for the update. That's kinda sad. Which shop did you use, or was it a private boat?

Texas Gulf Coast dive operator list

Any updates to this pinned thread? My wife and I did oil rig dives years ago, but I've heard that they've mostly been ripped out. Are there any good ones left?

    Balmorhea pool closed for repairs

Update: TPWD: News Release: Aug. 2, 2018: Repairs to Begin at Historic Balmorhea State Park Pool The good news is that they are starting work and planning on reopening, just don't know when.

Becoming a dive professional in Texas

What did your friend decide? I agree with those that say diving is a hobby in TX. As a long-time Austin DM, I'm lucky to pay off annual insurance and gas money with tips. Instructors are paid, but they don't make much profit either - summer has enough classes to make mediocre money, but the...

Diving the Comal River in New Braunfels, Texas?

I love diving the Comal, have about 20 dives there. If anyone is planning on doing a drift dive in the Comal (usually from Prince Solms Park down to exit, 2+ hours and tube chutes!) and needs a buddy, I may join. I do classes on the weekends (DM), but they've slowed way down after summer. You...

    Moving to Austin

Sorry, I just joined and saw this. I hope this info is still helpful to somebody. I have 100s of dives in Lake Travis (about 30 in the last 2-3 months) and quite a few in other Texas lakes. Not counting tiny places (not really lakes) like Spring Lake or Athens, Travis has the best average...
