We had no problems with taxis, they're cheap and easy. They also have rental dune buggies which looked like fun, too. To be honest, it's a small island - you'll see most of it walking or the hotel-to-shop taxi rides.

I really hope not, or our first ever trip to Coz or the Caribbean for my birthday may be ruined. Is shore diving at least an option? We could at least do that. Does the ferry still run, or we won't be able to get to the island?

My recommendation is to stick with snorkel gear until after the class. After you're certified and have decided you want and can dive more than once or twice a year, then I recommend getting your own gear. I'd compare the cost of rental gear to how often you want to dive to see how many dives...
