Xrays won't hurt any of your gear. When I travel I take my Regulator, Mask and Camera on board with me. Just make sure you don't have any knives or scuba tools in with your carry on. Sounds stupid but I have forgotten in the past.
I have 3 of them and I've never had a problem getting them filled. I always get an Eddy Current check on them every year and I've never had anyone refuse to fill them.
I use my Atomic in water that ranges from 35 degrees up through 80 water and I've never had a problem with it free flowing. The Apeks is a sealed diaphram vs the unsealed piston of the Atomic and for ice diving I would go with the Apeks but in water warmer than 40 or so I wouldn't worry about it.
In Oregon the law as far as I know only applys to boaters. Shore divers are not required to tow a dive flag. Either way, both are ignored equally. In Washington it's enforced on a county by county basis but the Diver Down flag is what is recognized up there.
I own a B2 and an ATX200 and they both perform about the same but I give a slight edge to the Atomic for the ergonomics. Very lightweight 2nd stage and it doesn't create quite as much drag when swimming but really you can't go wrong with either.
Under Water Works in Tigard has very good rental gear. They replace it every year so you won't get old beat up stuff. Dave is also the best equipment tech in town so you know it will be in good repair.
I've had a B1/T2 since 1998 and I've never had a problem. I've never upgraded the piston. Great reg and I still like it as much as the day I bought it. I have well over 600 dives on it and it's on it 's 4 or 5th rebuild.
I'd would stop and get neutral and wait one minute as prescribed in most OW Training. If my buddy did not appear I would make as slow of an ascent as possible. Top side I would wait for my buddy to discover that I was gone. This scenario should not be a big deal if everyone paid attention...
