I loved my old Ocean Master Z2 with the purge. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I could find one. I liked the purge when I was diving with two students in low vis. If I needed to hold on to both students I could purge my mask hands free. It's really a personal choice. Just like any...
I would buy it expecting to get it serviced. I would not take someones word for it on the regs history unless I knew that person well. I would check around the local area to see of it's a brand that you can get serviced as well.
If you live in Beaverton there are two shops on that side of town, Pacific Water Sports on 170th and TV Highway and Under Water Works on Main Street in Tigard. Both are good shops. I am partial to Under Water Works but that is because I'm a Divemaster there:)
It is a different experience. I really like them but depending on the mask you use you will require some additional training. You will also most likley use your air up more quickly with a full face mask. I really like them with a communication system.
To me so much of the DM training was gaining experience in a teaching environment and learning about working with new divers. I've been doing it for years and I'm still learning from every class. Rushing through it will be doing a disservice to you and the students and instructors you teach...
The water temps in the ocean around here is pretty consistant at around 50 degrees. The surface temp can be higher or lower depending on the season but below 15' it is generally around 50. Most people use either a 2 piece 7mm wet suit or a dry suit. There are some river and lake dives in the...
I'll second Maui Dreams, Ed Robinson's and Mike Severns. For shore diving I always use Maui Dreams because I've always had great service with them. I can't comment on Scuba Shack at all. I've also heard great things about Shaka Doug but I haven't had the pleasure of diving with him yet.
That's not normal. It's probably just out of adjustment. If you were doing 100 dives I'd say it needs to be serviced. Ask him for the parts when he services it and have him explain what the problem was. My Atomic starts to leak from the HP seat after about 150 dives and I get it rebuilt at...
If you do buy please take it to a shop and have them look it over. If it's been sitting in a box for a while it may need a little service before you dive it.
Good luck and for $50 you can't go wrong even if you have to pay for a total overhaul.
Poseidon regs are great regs, expensive to buy and service but very good. The do breath differently because they use a servo instead of a poppit valve. It takes some getting used to but they perform very well. I have both the Poseidon and an Apeks and given a choice I would buy another Apeks...
I have two Aeris computers, the first one is 9 years old and still going. I recently bought the XR1 as a back up and I love it. Very easy to use and easy to read. If you are not going to dive Nitrox soon you should be fine. I wouldn't hesitate to by another Aeris computer.
I have taken a Canon housing down to about 170' but I wouldn't make a habit of it. The repeated compression and decompression will take a toll on things. I would respect the 130' rating as much as possible.
