Buy what fits your diving. Forget the brand. Find the equipment that works best for you. If a Sherwood BC works better for you but you like the Scuba Pro regs mix and match. It's not written anywhere that you have to buy the same brand across the board. I don't think I have two pieces of...
I doubt a Sherwood Brut would fail because of the conditions. They are good regs just not the best. I would have it checked then serviced to verify that the req was indeed the problem.
A lot of shops do carry both lines but some don't. I would ask first. A shop that carries Aqua Lung/US Divers can probably get parts for an Apeks but I would double check.
They are both very good. In fact they are very similar. I would check around your area and see if there are shops that service both brands. You don't want to purchase a reg that you can't get serviced. That said, I would personally buy the Apeks. I wouldn't turn down a Legend though.
I dive in water that temp all of the time with an unsealed reg and it's never frozen up. The only time I've ever had one freeze was ice diving. When they freeze up they do free flow. Not as much as if you held down the purge button but they do free flow. I doubt what you had was a freezing...
Depreciation was the last thing on my mind when I bought my Atomic. I wanted good performance and reliability. I've had it for 8 years and don't know what I could sell it for. I don't think they would depreciate much more or less than a lower end reg.
I would have it inspected and tested every year and serviced as needed. If you do a lot of diving you may need to get it serviced every year. My Atomic is on a 2 year cycle but I do at least 100 dives a year so I get it serviced every year. The annual inspection should include a visual...
My least favorite:
1.) Fish Lake in northern Indiana. Nothing but mud. It took me days to get the silt out of my gear.
2.) Oysterville Washington. 0 vis, shallow and BORING!
3.) Any number of lakes in the mid-west. Shallow, boring and crappy vis.
Top 3:
North Wall on Grand Cayman
Manta off of Maui
Giant Pacific Octopus (about once a month)
Wish List:
Anywhere in the South Pacific
Under a Polar Ice Cap
A whale shark
I'd just drop in and talk to the staff at the local shops. You can get a lot by just talking to people. Get a feel for how they do business. Talk to some instructors. When I was looking to do my divemaster training I visited every shop in town until I found one that I liked. Talking to other...
I second Sansei, great sushi. I really Alexander's in Kehei for a quick fish and chips lunch. I also like Da Kitchen, not exactly fine dining but GOOD!
I wear a 2 mil shorty but I'm used to diving in 50 degree water year round. I think it has a lot to do with what you are used to. Some of the staff over there wear 5mil full suits.
I'd buy the Atomic B2 over the Oceanic but I'm very partial to Atomic Regs. Oceanic makes good requlators but in my opinion the Atomic performs better.
PS: you don't need to by a new reg to upgrade to DIN. You should be able to convert you existing req to DIN.
It's a good setup for shooting on film. I have the exact setup and use it a lot. Digital has taken over most of the underwater photography so you should be able to pick on up pretty cheap. Check Ebay and see what they are going for these days. I'd guess around $200.
A Spare Air is similar to a pony bottle but a pony bottle usually is quite a bit larger. My pony bottle is a 30 cubic foot tank with a separate regulator and pressure gauge. A Spare Air is usually only 1 to 3 cubic feet and will only allow you to make a direct ascent to the surface without...
I have an old DA Aquamaster that's from the early 60's that is still going strong. My primary reg is an Atomic from 1998 that works as well as when it was new and it's as good or better than any reg on the market today.
I think most regs will last for years as long as they are taken care...
