Near-DIR diving: Are there DIR things you would probably never do?

Maybe he just doesen´t accept the opinion that it is "the safest consistent setup across a large cross section of diving"...

    DAN missed the boat ...

I think all divers who´ve dived a bit have experienced a buddy system failiure. But like all the other critical skills, failiure is a reason to "try harder", not to "stop trying"... I dive with insta-buddies quite often and while there have been a few that I´d never dive with again, if I´m...

I died because of my slate - looking for articles/info on slate abbrev.

I agree but you also "have to start somewhere" and the beginning is usually a good place...maybe not during the course but pretty soon afterwards "team standards" should be established and comitted to memory, the slate then becomes a backup...until it is, two schedules should be brought on every...

Need an excel formula that will calculate CNS%

Why don´t you just make 4 columns? PO2, Exp time, time and cns%. Then you just divide "time" by "exp. time" in the formula for the "cns%"-column? Or am I misunderstanding your intended usage?

I died because of my slate - looking for articles/info on slate abbrev.

I´m not blackwood (obviously) but once you know your deco obligation it´s not hard at all to distribute that time across stops...you may be a minute or two off from a v-planner plan (for example) but in the grand scheme of things it´s not going to make much of a difference...so you only need to...

    Creation vs. Evolution

But how did you make that determination? To trust christianity... You have a whole buffet of "vendors"(religions, political and philosophical "ways of life") offering "trust me dives", how did you come to choose christianity? Since all these offer the same terms ie "in the long run we are...

Got My DM - But I Don't Want to Dive "This Way"...

I sometimes think that Instructors/DMS take the "same gear" to sell gear-approach too far... One of my DSs has the logo of a competing LDS sewn on (I bought it cheap 2nd hand) and all the "pro´s" were telling me that I shouldn´t wear it and how I´d better not let the owner catch me in it...So...

Got My DM - But I Don't Want to Dive "This Way"...

Peter I had the same experience as you, with the exeption that my DM-instructor was in BP/W for our whole class (and he was very happy for me to wear something different for the rescue-scenarios and so on)... For pool-dives we used jacket BCs (that were the only gear allowed in the pool) but...

Does the instructor have to cover everything in the PADI confined water dives?

I´m sorry but I think the fact that he felt compelled to tell you this speaks of insecurity, IMO. That´s like you saying you´re an "ex almost rocket scientist" except you never got into MIT... If both you and your wife have issues with his teaching, you should talk to the shopowner about it...

It´s a global marketplace, why shouldn´t he want everyone to play by the same rules?

    Rigging of multiple stages...

With aluminiums it doesen´t throw you (not me anyways) off balance. Besides making the LH minimally easier to deploy (I never had any issues when I had one on each side), I find that having one "side" totally free gives greater freedom of movement for my upper body and makes it easier to...

    More Dives or AOW??

I´d recommend you to get on yd (Yorkshire Divers - Dive Forums), or if you´re in a club, talk to some people, see if you can´t get someone experienced to take you on a dive at stoney or somewhere(don´t know where you are in the uk) a few times before your trip. I promise you that you´ll enjoy...

    Suspended Course Director

I agree....The problem isn´t the standards it´s that DMs who can´t hover (for example) are still certified by instructors... I think it´s gone on for so long now that people in the PADI-system can go all the way to instructor/CD without ever "seeing the bar"... I´m just a PADI DM but the...

I still got cold... any suggestions?

I´ve done the whole deal with craft-underlayer, santi vest and 400g undergarments together with a good hood and drygloves...After an hour in 42F water I came up shivering (and decided that it was unsafe to dive that way)... I now dive an RB, after an hour in 42F water I still came up cold...

    CCR Checklists

This is the checklist we made for the rEvo, during our course: Pre-dive: 1. Fill and analyze gas in bottles. 2. Check integrity of all valves in the breathing hose (inhale/exhale/mouthpiece) 3. Pack scrubbers. 4. Negative test for 2 mins. 5. Pressurize the system, check pressure and all...

    AL80 to 132ft (caution-contains math)

But to ensure that you surface with that 500psi reserve you need to know a few things: -Your SAC. -Your planned bottom time. -Your depth(s) (at different depths/avg. if you´re going to multilevel). -Your tank volume at the start of the dive and what gas you´re using. No OW-course I´ve ever...
