    Unit compatibility (DIR practitioners invited)

    a) For a reef-dive it wouldn´t matter all that much but I would want a common language for units before I get wet... b) Thats how I would do it, its not that hard after all. c) Then someone will need to learn basic math. e) No, I have and will dive both. f) It is an issue to consider...

    Malta or Canary Islands??

Pretty much what MarkUK said...the rules are "negotiated" constantly...it is interesting but I would make sure that you get a good insurance with your rental vehicle if you get one... I would recommend Oxygéne in Sliema (Oxygène) because they were good to me when I was there, seemed well...

    Malta or Canary Islands??

I´ve been to Malta(and Gozo) 2 times and to a few of the different Canary Islands....just so you know where I´m coming from... Both will propably be warm enough for you (meaning you can dive them comfortably in wetsuits), Malta is the warmest of the two, specially in the summer. Depending...

    Rebreather Training...

I bought mine, a rEvo, before I´d dived it (and before the course). I bought mine because the unit I bought was the one on the market that closest corresponds to the "ideal" RB and manufacturer I want (or think I want). I had also heard a lot of the "you propably wont like it at...

    What motivates you?

My prime motivator is experiencing "flow": Flow (psychology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) For me, when feeling "flow", it almost feels possible to taste the chemicals filling your bloodstream and you feel "alive" in a way that makes "everyday life" pale in comparison. I find it...

Valve/manifold procedures "in the real world"

I know you didnt mean it that way but talking about how things "should" be when discussing incident responses seems very unproductive (if things were as they "should" you wouldnt have an issue to respond to in the first place) I thought the reason we didnt plan for two major failiures was...

Rant: Home of the Free and Land of the Brave

I dont think anyone in this thread has, categorically, said they wouldnt dive with a 400lb diver. And there may be people who feel, based on the information provided so far, that they wouldnt feel comfortable diving with such a diver (or who are unwilling to make the compromises they feel...

Valve/manifold procedures "in the real world"

But in the OPs hypothetical there is no team. So "most of the time" you end up with more gas than you need (more than 1/3ds and a team with additional gas around you) and on "rare occassions" you die (less than 1/3, alone and you don´t make it out)... Whenever Im not sure (like willing to...

Rant: Home of the Free and Land of the Brave

Disclaimer: I havent read the thread in question. (but have seen what I believe to be similar ones) I think its fair to point out the risks and dangers associated with, in this case, being obese like increased risk of heart conditions etc. That is stuff most people should be able to google or...

Type I Bends Hit in Chuuk

Not to "armchair" this too much but... I can understand you yielding on the first 21m stop but you really should have spent the rest of it recalculating your obligation to make sure you had it right. Ascending from deco to the surface should never be done without prior communication in the...

    SAC rate & RMV

At 50 dives, I would stay away from "breath control teqniques" and just dive. As your comfort and relaxation in the water increases your consumption will drop and eventually stabalize... As has already been said, your consumtion will also vary depending on if you are in a thin wetsuit in...

    Cave Dive yes Overhead ?

I did one of those (after cave training) and I have to say that what I saw on those dives were some of the scariest things Ive seen in diving... OW divers with poor bouyancy control and the guides only "qualification" was OWI and the fact that he/the center charged for the experience...I was...

    Cave Dive yes Overhead ?

Well, you certainly have strong oppinions but this is a forum and you don´t get to decide what is, or is not ok to tell other people. If you think this is the way things work then I understand your frustration (but I don´t really sympathize with it)... What some people in this thread are...

Deco with too less air, options from the book

Late to the party as well but... First off, I would eliminate all the "feel goods"(at all levels), the stuff you add to your "safe profile" "just because" and go to my nominal plan. If I still didn´t have enough gas, I would do the deep stuff first and skimp on the shallows. -If am going...

    Cave/Wreck and OC trimix/rebreather trimix

I disagree that the material is that common... IANTD has a combination course for the cavern/adv. wreck level and I think it makes some sense there (Ive taken that course) but for the more advanced levels I believe that the enviroments, and the complexity of the dives in those enviroments do...

    Cave/Wreck and OC trimix/rebreather trimix

Having taken both tech wreck and (full) cave, I disagree pretty strongly that they are "the same course"...They are both overheads but like others have already pointed out, the hazards and planning of those two kinds of dives are completely different. I have OC tmx which does allow me to use...

    The soloist

I´m well late to this party, but as this has been one of the better threads I´ve seen in here for some time, I thought I´d chime in... One thing that I find appealing about diving is how easy it is to encounter your limits (whatever they are). IMO, you become a better diver by moving your...

What's the deal with the "Advanced Nitrox" certification?

While a gue-f will certainly focus on the "fundamentals" I think you will find that adv. nitrox/tmx will as well (with the caveat that it is instructor dependent). The reason being that those courses are the "intro to tech" for those agencies (tdi/iantd)...My own personal experience (with IANTD)...
