    Help I can't see!

The DC600 doesn't have a viewfinder it has an LCD screen. Are you having a hard time seeing the LCD screen? I don't think a black mask will help much - thats more important when using a camera with an actual viewfinder, such as a dSLR. Are you looking at the LCD screen straight on, or at...

    Any Drysuit users self-taught?

I am mostly self taught. I had a very skilled buddy (ex padi instructor) do a pool session with me. We went over the basic skills, including gearing up, buoyancy control, inversions, etc. We then did one easy shore dive to about 50 feet deep, stopping at 25 feet to practice buoyancy skills...

Photos from Catalina/Santa Cruz trip (imgs)

I recently went on a three day live aboard out of Santa Barbara. We were on the Vision and headed for San Clemente/Anacapa/Platform Grace, but ended up at Catalina and Santa Cruz thanks to some bad weather. Still the trip was a lot of fun, thanks to the rest of the passengers, a motley bunch...

    Your images, where?

I find this poll to be a bit ridiculous (and yes, I'm going to vote "no" as soon as I finish this e-mail). I've been reading (and posting occasionally) to this forum for a couple of year, so I've seen plenty of opinionated people. Let's remember that we are talking about photography here...

Synchronisation faster then 1/500s with D70

If its like my d80, then it can only do high speed synchronization with a Nikon flash. They use some kind of common protocol that makes the flash pulse. This would not work with an underwater strobe. I don't know if it would work with a housed Nikon flash underwater. David

    Dry Suit Squeeze

What kind of undergarments are you wearing? Warm garments increase your buoyancy, requiring more lead. On a different note, supportive underwear made the squeeze much more edurable - kept the frank and beans in a good position. I use spandex/lyrca swim shorts. My first dives were in boxers...

    Northern Channel Islands photos

The Vision from Truth Aquatics in Santa Barbara. The Hilton Aeolid was at the Arch Rock dive site at Santa Cruz island. They're a good dive company. The boats are well designed and the limited load outting are uncrowded with great food. David

    Northern Channel Islands photos

I added captions. The underwater photos were all shot with Nikon D80 dSLR in an Ikelite housing Nikon 60mm macro lens, with a Woody diopter for the two nudibranches Dual Ikelite DS125 strobes The whale photos were shot from a long distance with the D80, a Nikon 70-200VR lens and a...

    Northern Channel Islands photos

Just got back from three days in the Channel Islands. The bad weather blew away our itinerary, so we ended up at Catalina (not San Clemente) and Santa Cruz (not Anacapa or Platform Grace). I haven't had time to process many photos, but here are a few. Hilton's Aeolid nudibranch...

Diving in the Kelp Beds on 9/15 (imgs)

I went diving on Saturday. The kelp was a bit thin. Saw at least six species of nudies. The second dive was shallow with surge and terrible vis. Spent most of the dive chasing lobster. Think of it as batting practice for the season opener in two weeks. Or...survival boot camp for the...

    Boxers or Briefs

I went diving again today. I wore a pair of "Dive" brand spandex/neoprene swim trunks. The worked great. I didn't feel a bit of discomfort. In fact, today's dives were the first where I felt completely comfortable in my drysuit. Last time, I was using 32 lbs. This time, I switched to a...

    Boxers or Briefs

My drysuit is a DUI TLS350. The undergarment is a DUI Thinsulate 200g. It is medium weight. My weight lead went up 8-10 pounds. In my reading, this doesn't seem too atypical. Is it? I just don't want to go up more than necessary. Using some spandex shorts will probably allow me to use...

    Boxers or Briefs

I'm getting used to my new TLS350 trilam drysuit, my first. Its working pretty well. I've gone from 22 lbs weight (7/5 wetsuit with hooded vest) to 32 lbs with my 200g undergarments. I've unwillingly worked my way up the weight scale, since I hate to dive with extra lead, wet or dry. Still...

Nikon D40 - Pros and Cons

I checked the search function and nothing came up. Strange. There was a lot of discussion on the D40(x) when they cam out. Most people seemed to conclude that while they are nice cameras, the missing lens motor was a huge drawback. You have to use AF-S lenses. Lenses that you can't use...

    8/31 Los Coronados pictures

Went down to Los Coronados on the Lois Ann last weekend. It was my first trip on the boat, which was nice. My primary objective was to refine my weighting on my new drysuit. I also took my camera. The drysuit went well - I further learned why boxers are not the preferred base layer in a dry...

Viking Drysuit with HUGE boot - what fins do you use?

I noticed that the Scubapro TwinJet Maxes have a foot pocket that is more conducive to larger boots. My Size 10 DUI boots would require an XL TwinJet, but fit fine in an L TwinJet Max. Perhaps this is true for the entire product line. The new footpocket seems to be rounder than the old fin...

    Dry suit learning curve

Rob9000, One of your lessons was bring more weight than you think you need. I'm curious as to how your weighting changed. What is your normal wetsuit type and how much lead do you carry? With your Pinnacle undergarments, how much lead did you settle on for drysuit diving? I am...

    D80 and 18-200mm VR DX

Spyder - look at that 60mm Nikon again. You'll find that just about every underwater Nikon photographer has it in their bag (or did before they moved on to the 105). It's a solid lens and was my first purchase. To me, macro was an easier way to get started than wide angle. I'm still working...
