    Pet peeves of SCUBA diving

I am surprised that this thread was revived, but who doesn't like a little gripe session? Divers who take forever to get geared up. Divers who think there's nothing wrong with taking forever to gear up while you are baking alive waiting for them. Divers who think they're much better than they...

    New from Western PA

Congratulations and welcome to the community. Wreck diving in Lake Erie is a fantastic experience for anyone interested in history. You'll dive with Lake Erie Adventure Charters in Erie or Osprey in Barcelona NY. Unfortunately the season has pretty much wrapped up at this point, but it's...

    I'm such an idiot!

Ouch. Sympathies, that's one expensive brain fart. It seems to be happening a lot this year - my dive club has an end-of-the-year award for the biggest screw-up, and nominations are more numerous and severe this time than any other year I remember. The current leader left his pickup bed gate...

    Buyer Paralysis

Different strokes for different folks, but my approach is to start researching those future purchases long before I know I will be ready to make them. By the time I am ready I have no doubts or anxiety about the decision, only the satisfaction of completing the process. As a bonus I get to look...

Bad accident on Independence II today (20 Aug 2022)

The news articles says he was found on the bottom without a reg in his mouth, which would be a drowning and not the bends or an embolism.

    New Deep6 Service Manual available.

Just glancing over it, it looks nice. Jim's manual was excellent, but I really like the way the tools list is now and the additional photos. It seems like an improvement on something that was already great.

    Darn I miss DeepSeaSupply

He set me up with my BPW when I was new and didn't know much. Love that thing. I was googling smbs last year and I saw a picture of his and tried to find out where to get it, and then went "oh."

    Figuring out EaN Percentages

This falls into the category of mixing gas, which I am not knowledgeable in but there are certainly books available for it. I believe there are also tables you can search for.

    HP hose burst (failure)

I bought 2 SS hp hoses from Piranha last season, put them on my sidemount tanks, and both failed within 5 dives... not even bent, clearly a bad batch. I keep a spare in my save-a-dive kit now. Yours looks like a fluke, but it is also the hose most likely to fail, in my experience.

Darn. RIP Sam, you will be missed.

    Safety check my idea

Exhalation effort and risk of forcing a freeflow from bubbles in a pipe creating suction. Your solution looks pretty nicely done, but you'll need to fully account for both issues before trusting it.

Need Wing Recs for warm water rig

I ordered the Deco wing, thanks.

Need Wing Recs for warm water rig

I want to make a new sidemount rig for warm water boat diving with a pair of al80's. I build my own harnesses, but I need a wing. I figure 15-20lbs of lift from the wing will be plenty. I am leaning towards the Deco 22lb sidemount bladder I saw from @DevonDiver - the price is right - but I am...

First Steel Tank - Single LP85 or HP80

You've gotten good advice. Hp100's, get two of the same thing if you can swing it, different manufacturer's tank have different buoyancy characteristics, and finding used hp100's is challenging in today's market. Heck, even new hp100's have been out of stock frequently over the past year. Good luck.

I'm done with teaching. It's time.

Thanks for all you've done Jim. You helped me a lot. Gotta enjoy everything while you can.

    Wing Size Advantages and Disadvantages

One of the best things about BP/W is its modularity. The smaller wing is a bit smaller, a bit more streamlined, has a bit less drag, but if you want a wing that can do cold water and warm then get the bigger wing to cover everything and later you might pick up a small wing just for the warm...

    New Blacktip setup...

I would love to hear from someone who uses the expedition tube. I know it is longer, 10 pounds heavier, has a lower depth rating (260' vs 400') and of course it requires 4 batteries instead of 2, but I've never handled one.

Am I being a wimp about these dive plans, or is this how you become a better diver?

I trust that 7 pages in the overwhelming advice is absolutely do not do a 100' dive with only OW training and 12 dives under your belt. Because that is insane as far as I am concerned. My simple little rule of thumb is "am I going to be/am I able to save my buddy's life during this dive if...
