Tipping is not necessary in Australia, no one here tips. That being said the crew would appreciate a tip even more so.
Ear plugs to help you sleep. If the boat is travelling overnight, you can sometimes hear the engines.
Some cash for bar and snacks. Even if all meals will be provided...
I agree with Tortuga68 although my Vyper recently locked me out of air mode for 48 hours after a 3 minute dive in gauge mode. I was dissapointed as I then logged 3 dives in gauge mode. The up side is the dive profile and most other info is still stored and downloadable. But I digress
The...
1. Find a local dive shop and ask them where are some locations for beginners / low difficulty dives or get a book that explains a few locations. These are usually in protected bays or other sheltered areas protected from currents and / or swell.
2. Once you know a few locations look at them...
I agree with whats already been said.
Just outside Sydney (1hour drive) there are some good locations also.
To the North there is Terrigal Terrigal Dive Centre
To the south there is Shellharbour Shellharbour Scuba: Local Diving
Also a local website were you may be able organise...
Instead of holding your breath try slowly exhaling for 10. Your air consumption probably wont improve, but its a safer alternative.
I use to hold as well. It did give me longer bottom times, but only on slow dives. If you need to do much finning, youll soon feel short of air, and hence now...
Gday,
Never dived the west coast but Ive been to the GBR a few times.
The best diving out of Cairns is on the outer barrier reef ie. the ribbon reefs and the remote reefs like Osprey reef. The links below show an overview and detailed maps of the GBR.

Hi,
I have the camera and was contenplating taking it UW with an Ikelite housing.
Anyone filming UW with this camera? Im interested on the image quality in low light and overall thoughts.
Thanks
Ive just bought a mares dragon and while its good quality and comfortable, Im still not used to it after 6 dives.
The dump handles are difficult to find, the whisle gets tangled (ill probably chop it off) and the tank sits a fair way off my back which makes me bigger in the water :shakehead:
Ive been too warm in 27-28 deg water.
I had a 3mm long sleeve, short leg surfing wetsuit on a liveaboard. My mask would fog constantly and I was uncomforable, especially while finning heavily.
A 3mm full suit sounds about right, but Id consider a 2/3mm hood as backup rather than a 5mm full...
Here in Aus the Hydrotesters can also service the valves. Its a good time to do the valves as the tank is dried after the hydrotest, meaning there is no moisture in the tank when the valve is refitted (more important for steel tanks)
Agree, but the picture sets a bad example for those who dont know the difference and made me cringe at fist glance.
Front cover- Knock knock (pause)... "Hello (pause) marketing department...is there anyone here...?"
This would be me and my OW buddy deciding to do a shore dive at an unknown spot (approx dive number 8).
Surface swam out till we couldnt see the bottom (~300ft) decended and proceeded to swim until we were low on air, surfaced 1200ft+ offshore  somewhat suprised at our distance from...
