    Odd Divers

My preferred dive team is a trio. It increases redundancy and provides more options in case of problems. Buddy checks are done together, starting at the head and working down to the fins. We stand facing each other. Each person checks their gear, including identifying the equipment in...

    Spare Air

Spare Air is a complete and utter waste of money. You're better off developing buddy and gas management skills so that you don't need it. If you want redundancy, get a set of doubles. If you don't want doubles, get something big enough to allow you to return to the upline and ascend...

Has anyone been griefed for their BP&W?

I've had people ask me about my rig when I'm working OW classes. We usually end up chatting about it and why I like it. If a DM on a trip that I was paying for gave me that attitude, I'd respond with something along the lines of "I guess you must not do much tech diving, because there is...

Hey Hoover ~ Did you ruin someone's dive?

The same thing I've said to operators who tried to hook me up with newbies who needed babysitting. "Put me on the liability waivers, have the divers re-sign them and comp my dive. If you want me to work by taking care of newbies while I'm on vacation, your not going to get me to pay for the...

Hey Hoover ~ Did you ruin someone's dive?

When I first started diving, I bought HP120's so that I wouldn't have as many hoover issues. I also worked aggressively on not being a hoover and it has paid off. I don't usually have the buddy problem because I don't show up without an assigned buddy. However, if a hoover got on my...

    really embarrassing, stupid question

I've never trained with Pan Aqua or set foot in their store. However, I did meet several of their staff at Dutch Springs and observed their setup. They seemed like a nice group of people with a well run group.

    Back Inflation BC is SUICIDE!!!

I believe that your instructor's statement are amoungst the stupidest things I've ever read on this Board. Scenario A: If I'm surfacing an unconscious diver, I'm going with him/her. I'll worry about keeping their head out of the water when I hit the surface. If I'm on a deco profile...

    Halcyon fair trade pricing

As a preliminary matter, I don't see how you're getting ripped off. They sell, you buy. Unless you didn't get the gear you paid for, its not the shop's fault if you paid more than other shops are charging. Its your fault for not doing your homework. Now that you've done that homework, the...

    Mosquito gague-only mode?

You're correct. There is no gauge mode on a Mosquito. My wife doesn't dive in gauge mode. I gave her the Mosquito and bought a Stinger. Gauge mode is still the free diving mode, but it doesn't error out on you.

    questions for instructors

I'd agree with this statement. Personally, I'm in it because (1) most of my regular dive buddies (and all of my tech buddies) are on staff at the same LDS; (2) I get some perks from the LDS (after hours access to the shop and the fill station and discounts on gear); and (3) I enjoy teaching...

High School Reunion: Bang or Bust?

I went to my 10 year college reunion a few years ago and had a great time. My 20 year high school reunion is coming up. I'm planning to put in an appearance. Whether I'll stay for long depends on who else shows up.

    Suunto Stinger

My Stinger spends most of its time as a backup bottom timer. I'll use it as a computer if I'm in the Carribean or when I'm working classes. I absolutely love it. I'm especially fond of the second timer and the log feature. The display is easy to comprehend. While the size is not an issue...

    Computer only dives?

Who is fumbling around? If you can't keep a reasonable track of how much gas you've got left in your tank and use that information to determine how much time you've got left, you need more than a computer.... However, I'm sure that they are perfect for the u/w tourist from the "be back...

    Computer only dives?

Its probably not imprudent, but, IMHO, it is an utter complete and utter waste of money that could be better spent on more useful items. I bought an Aeris 500AI a few years ago. It told me everything that I could possibly need to know, including how many minutes I had left, a couple of cute...

Another callout 122604. Will this be the last?

My thoughts are with the injured officer. Good luck on the write-up, GaryD. FWIW, you were right, the REMF was wrong.

Are you a CABB or WWW diver?

Neither. I don't enjoy shore diving in the Northeast. The parking is not particularly good, I'm not aware of any decent wrecks that can be reached from shore and the sites are crowded. Since there are boats that run most of the year, I take January off to pull maintenance on my gear and...

    HID Lights blinding Fish?

I don't know for sure, but I try to err on the side of caution. I was diving earlier today. My buddy and I came across a fairly large sculpin just sitting out on the sand. Since we both use 18W HID's, we did not shine the light directly on the fish. We did focus the beams nearby so that...
