NITEK X For Sale OR Trade

I have a gently used Nitek X that I need to let go. This is an excellent full Trimix Decompression computer. Description is lifted from the net. Also have the Transfer cable for downloading to your PC. MSRP is $1199 for the package, separately a bit more. I'll let this go for $600, or I will...

    Tip share with crew

My partner and I are both Captains. We typically split time, one as Captain, one as DM/Hand. All tips go into our bottom line. On a good weekend we use the tips to take our wives out for dinner.

    Securing tanks

I use Roll control adjustable fold down arms. They can be easily moved to accomodate tanks other than AL 80's, and fold down out of the way when not needed. No better system in my mind. A little pricey, but very professional looking and no hassle.

    USS Ozark

Our dive boat is an inshore boat for the most part. All the amenities, but slow as molasses. Fully loaded with 4 divers and tech gear, plus crew, we'd be lucky to make 8 knots - and that on a perfectly flat day! Loaded down with 6 OW divers and crew, we do 12 knots at best.

    USS Ozark

New to the forum, looking for some info regarding a boat to take 4 of us out to the Ozark this summer. Can anyone recommend a good captain and boat?

    Federal Licenses for spearfishing

That's my understanding of it. If you are just some guys out fishing, as long as you have the appropriate recreational licenses you should be okay. Once you take ANY money, it can be construed as commercial and you're nailed. I'd be real careful about it. If you are licensed and run...

    Buddy Breathing

While I respect your position, I still disagree in principle. The old standard served two purposes for me. First, it established that a prospective student could in fact swim and was comfortable in the water. Secondly, it also established that the prospective student had some general physical...

    Buddy Breathing

I quote NAUI's Standards and Policies Manual for you: "...Students shall complete at least 15 continuous stroke cycles..." The old wording was for completion of a 200 meter swim, un-timed, any stroke. So what is this "competent watermanship" to which you refer? I posit that NAUI (and most of...

your opinion on the best Regulators for Tek diving

Diverite RG2500's. I recently dived Eagle's Nest for the first time and they performed flawlessly. Plus, for those of us who service our own stuff, we can get parts!

    Buddy Breathing

That's a shame. I still teach single regulator air sharing in addition to buddy breathing with a 2nd stage/octopus set up (or Air2), and I always will. Just because the agencies cut out subjects doesn't mean we can't continue to require them. Example: NAUI no longer requires a distance swim...

    Anyone dove with whale sharks

I had a great encounter with one diving on the Oriskany this past July. I was diving with Gary's Gulfdivers, he has the pics I took posted somewhere. We met up with it at the stern at about 100' deep, and it stayed with us back to the conning tower, where it veered off and left when the...

Guy lying about his "master " rating?

Amen. I've been driving diveboats professionally for 6 years now, and spent many years prior at the helm of my own boats and under the tutelage of a great old Captain. That being said, I have always been amazed that the requirements to be a Captain do not include actually having driven a boat!

    Right Angle Adapters

If you have to use swivels, take them apart and apply Loc Tite to the threads. This will give you a better chance of not having them fail. On a personal note, I had one fail just after suiting up one evening at JB. I lost a lot of gas pretty quick, thankfully was in knee deep water doing...

    Pony Bottle / Spare Air

I personally don't believe in either, although a pony bottle is the lesser of two evils. Use of these things creates a false sense of security and tends to make one less in tune with ones abilities and surroundings. A better solution is to know how much gas you have to within 200 psi at all...

    solo dive from a boat?

Done it plenty of times. Here's my procedure: I drop anchor (or grappel) the site. I then suit and splash with all the usual stuff AND a safety chain with a snap link. I drop down the rode and "chain off" to the site with the safety chain. On ascent, I remove the safety and surface via the...

    PADI or NAUI

It really isn't the agency, it's the instructor. I'm a NAUI Instructor. That being said, I've met my share of crap NAUI Instructors and some really great PADI, TDI, SSI instructors. The person is the key. I tell all of my students to seek out instructors who they feel confident in for follow...
