Caught a weird sea creature while fishing....does anyone know what it is?

Am I correct that the strike of a mantis shrimp can generate a very audible "pop"? I saw a fellow once try to get one to strike to demonstrate this, but the shrimp was not in a cooperative mood.

    Mouthpiece detached - video clip

What is this goop? The only goop I know of is a hand cleaner? Assuming it is an adhesive, what sort of fumes does it give off? And how bad is that going to be breathing that stuff at depth? I'm thinking about the increased partial pressure of what ever vapors this stuff is giving off in you...

    Diver panics video clip

Very useful tip there, Rachel. Something I'll watch out for in the future. Going from horizontal to vertical. Getting in the "launch" position.

New mask coming (Yay!) Cleaning question

Regardless of what you use to scrub -- be it toothpaste or softscrub w/bleach -- don't use a toothbrush. A toothbrush is not very maneuverable on the inside of a mask and you can't develop enough pressure to do an effective job. Instead use a small cloth or a cotton ball or a small gauze...

    Diver panics video clip

Hah! That last one with the bad rental equipment--- They've got more bubbles coming from more different places than a Lawrence Welk show!! (Younger folks may have to google that one) And the other two -- all that excess finning and sculling around -- a sure sign of someone that is not...

    Sea Hunt

Oh, yeah -- about Mike's tying a line to his knife the using it as a grappling hook to pull out of the quicksand in the river bed. He has his usual BFK with him and ties it to some pretty heavy line. Then he throws it accurately to engage the rocks. Ever try to throw anything underwater...

    Sea Hunt

Just watched an episode. Mike's looking for uranium deposits in a river bed. Right where his Geiger counter starts clicking he starts SINKING IN QUICKSAND!! Yes, underwater and yes, somewhat neutrally buoyant. He escapes only by the narrowest of margins. :rofl3: Fun, Fun!

    Mouthpiece detached - video clip

The thing that disturbs me most about this it that she appears to ascend several feet and appears to hold her breath. Am I wrong? I notice that the hose and the body of the reg are also right there between her right arm and body and could have easily been swept up into her mouth. I wonder...

You mean that wasn't covered in YOUR rescue diver class??? Didn't Mike also give one of the guys he was rescuing his mask? If he didn't in that episode, he did in another. The guy's got sonar... don't need no steenkin' mask to see in the dark... just a BFK and away we go! But no worry... If...

New mask coming (Yay!) Cleaning question

Soft scrub with bleach. Flames on a mask scare me -- too hard to be precise and KNOW how hot things are getting, especially on the soft skirt.

    Ah darn button

Who made the housing? My SP350 buttons only work reliably in my Ikelite housing if the camera is nicely snugged up on it's mount.

    Rescue Class Requirements

Physically demanding. Especially when the guy playing the "panicked victim" is a 7 foot Greek (slight exaggeration) who'll try to drown you if you err. Learned a lot. Great fun. Great course!

Ahhh, Nemrod..... Your photos are bringing up memories. We had family in Ocala and would visit Silver Springs often as a kid. I've snorkeled many hours in the swimming area they used to have. Even then (late '60s and early '70s) you could not swim or snorkel in the Mammoth Springs area...

Guys -- Bathing Suit under 3mm wetsuit? 7mm wetsuit?

Speedo makes spandex swimwear with legs. I forget what you call them. That's what I wear. Can't stand a regular bathing suit bunching up underneath a wet suit. As others have mentioned they are called jammers. I do not run around on the beach or dive boat in them. I always cover them with...

    Smoking and Diving?

An additional smoking risk is that if you are on a dive boat with me and I am feeling a little seasick queasy and the smell of your ciggies pushes me to the point of vomiting you may be my target. "Mind if I smoke?" "Why no. Mind if I hurl?" Seriously... I am ASTONISHED at the number of...
