    Cookies or arrows?

Another item that someone very experienced in both Florida and Mexico caves related to me regarding cookies, was that the higher flow nature of caves in Florida makes being efficient much more important. For example, in Mexico, one can afford to futz around a bit more placing cookies as...

    Cookies or arrows?

Another thing your poll forgot to ask: When deciding to mark a point on the line w/ a cookie, do you place one for the team, or does each team member place a cookie? Kevin

ball on the end of a reel?

So can we agree the answer is: If one is at 10' depth in warm Mexico waters, ball isn't needed while, if one is at 80'+ depth in cold waters with dry gloves, ball is nice to have.

ball on the end of a reel?

I had a ball on the end of my reel during Cave 1. It was commented on by the instructor as perhaps not needed, but he didn't make me remove it. For myself, the thinking might be that for colder water conditions, having the ball on the line is of use as it can be a PITA to rethread the line...

    Failure Combinatorics

So the whole manuscript of thinking could be boiled down to: You hear bubbles: 1) If there is a diver on your long hose, switch him off 2) trouble shoot like normal You are out of gas 1) go to the diver who has donatable gas Communication: Make sure to communicate all failures to...

    GUE and smoking

I remember my GUE instructor asking us after we completed the swim test with us, "Who here thinks he could be in better shape?" and he was the first to raise his hand. Physical fitness is a journey not a defined goal. There is always something that can be improved upon no matter how fit one...

    Standard gasses?

Perhaps more accurate to say that "ease of mixing" is a bit of a red herring to you. Others use different systems and thus have different needs. For example we have one gentleman who has several T and K bottles of He and O2 in his garage. He partial pressure blends all the time.

What are you most embarrassed about?

Scootering by a group of kick divers I do a barrel roll thinking I am going to look really really cool, and roll right into a thick strand of kelp to stick in it like a fly on a web. I could just hear their comments in my mind, "Real smooth dork!"

GUE Fundies/Tech 1: Do Boat Operators Still Want AOW Card Too?

I was sorta surprised that they didn't at least ask for us to write in our cert #s on the forms. Kinda nice though. Fundies card is useless* (with one cavat) throw it in the drawer and forget about it. *Note that I mean the card is useless not the training. Only use for the card is to...

    The power of the system.

Yeah that boat ride was pretty sweet. I beleive is sea law that a boat ride can only be considered bad if on the way back in, one leaves ones feet when the boat crests. And any boat that greets returning divers with hot chocolate chip cookies is A-ok in my book. :) Conditions were...

    Master the Underwater swim test

Surprised on the comments that the wall push off isnt allowed in the GUE test. Have completed two classes with two different instructors so far and in both cases pushing off the wall was done. I wonder if this is an instructor specific requirement.

    Doc Wong's Tech One Reports

Oh yes. Go second. I do think it makes it easier when you have a buddy sitting at the rock waving at you and encouraging to make that last bit of distance. Don't go after the instructor though. Its always a bit disheartening to see him do there and back again (150'+) most of the way on his...

    Doc Wong's Tech One Reports

When you get down there to Pondarosa its just a matter of pushing past the pain of that last 15 to 20 feet. You can see that big rock coming up so you just have to keep repeating to yourself, "It sucks, it hurts, but just hold on a few more seconds and I won't have to do it again"

NAUI DIR tech course content (kinda split from DIR variances)

Well while I think the example you give is rather silly (the flow doesn't pick up suddenly now that one is doing a lost buddy search) I do agree with you on wanting to go dive in Florida as well to help broaden my dive experiences and hope to get out there soon. Just haven't had the chance...

NAUI DIR tech course content (kinda split from DIR variances)

I will agree with you there that its absolutely more inefficient. A diver friend of ours recently talked about the history of cookies and placement methods and basically said that originally people were using clothespins, but found that the "pins" were easy to dislodge so each team mate would...

NAUI DIR tech course content (kinda split from DIR variances)

Wouldn't you reference yours and your teams cookies that you placed your exit side of the line? I hear what your saying regarding the line sliding away from the cookies being placed. Not sure what the solution to that would be though I could see placing another second cookie and tying your...

    Question for you Tech Divers

For the most part it is somewhat difficult to do shore kick "tech" dives in the Monterey area. The one major exception being north Monastery. For shore tech diving with scooters, Pt Lobos is the most popular spot as there are several locations int he tech 1 range. Lobos has a boat ramp...

    Question for you Tech Divers
