    Gradient Factors For a Rookie

Erik Baker's original idea when he introduced gradient factors was to make the entire dive profile more conservative and not just at surfacing which the GFHi controls. Introducing a GFLo made the first stop deeper and added additional decompression stops. The deeper stop had a negative effect in...

    Gradient Factors For a Rookie

Here is something I posted awile ago on a different thread: The SurGF feature does provide an "on-the-fly" option to make the dive safer through additional off gassing at the safety stop or another depth. Keep in mind that the NDL calculation takes GFHi into consideration so that an ascent...

    Gradient Factors For a Rookie

I'm a few years older than you and dive with 70/90 on my Perdix dive computer. Most of my dives are NDL but occasionally I do some light deco (less than 5 minutes). Generally speaking, NDL diving can tolerate a higher GFHi than deco dives. Everyone is different. There are many more factors that...

    47 Meters Down

One problem with filming long scuba diving swimming scenes realistically is the lack of communications between the divers or between the divers and the crew on the boat. This can be overcome by full face masks with communication. Otherwise, the underwater scenes will need to be narrated. Wait...

    47 Meters Down

If they did that it would cut the show time in half. They have to fill in the time and make it more exciting. Yeah, car chases are exciting to a point and their demise on crime shows might be a reflection of the fact that the police, in real life, have backed off from these chases because of the...

    47 Meters Down

If police were as dumb as they are portrayed on some TV shows (criminal minds come to mind) there wouldn't be any cops alive. The face off you describe between the cops and the perp is better known as the Mexican stand off with or without a hostage. In real life the cop(s) will be shot...

    Victory post!

Being able to really enjoy diving, for me, was the ability to relax and go slow. You say it takes a lot of trial and error. For me, it took a lot of diving and I think you'll find with experience you will relax and become more comfortable in the water. This will lead to safer and more enjoyable...

What solo cert do you have, has it ever been turned down?

Your definition for "balanced rig" is different than how most users define it on SB. As I have described it above I don't use "lots of weight" to get down but just enough to allow me to descend when I exhale, and that allows me to swim up to the surface. To be horizontal the term I would use is...

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

Yes. That seems inexpensive but you have to paddle them yourself!

New diver stuck between 2 computers

It's too bad things didn't work out with your old computer. You made a great choice going with the Perdix. I dive with a Perdix and it is "overkill" for the diving I'm doing now which is air and nitrox recreational diving. At one time I was considering technical diving so I would have needed the...

What solo cert do you have, has it ever been turned down?

I have a balanced rig and have successfully swam it up (in fresh water) from 100 ft. to the surface with the wing completely empty. However, I'm slightly negative so I need to fin slightly to stay afloat. I imagine if you're with a buddy, and you stay together, your buddy can add more gas to...

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

I had two kids that not only had different personalities but different interests. One of the kids was extroverted and loved to be with his friends outside doing various activities that were more consistent with an older generation. When he was young and we needed to punish him he had to stay...

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

It depends. From inside a cavern or cave maybe not. Besides, the air at the surface is a backup. I said "without a backup".

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

What they both have in common is when you run out of air without a backup you die.

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

Claustrophobia is what I've heard too. Their reasoning is that the equipment is too confining and should an emergency occur they will not be able to get out of the equipment to swim to the surface. It kind of reminds me of days long past when wearing seat belts while riding in a car was not...

    Dive Calculation Spreadsheet

While playing around with the spreadsheet I noticed on the VER sheet I did not add the version information for v34.2. I added the information and updated the website. Here is the link if you want to download it: https://ecfehlau.wixsite.com/my-site If you are a little familiar with Excel you...

You offgas faster at 5m depth than on the surface

On a recent flight I looked at my Shearwater Perdix and it was flashing red showing a ppO2 of 0.16 at cruising altitude. You add a mask on top of alcohol and dehydration and no wonder some people are going nuts. :)
