solo diving training vs tech training

True. But, you're making the assumption that all tech divers will be making tech dives all the time. The situation I was thinking about was the tech diver who dives a recreational dive from a boat who has not brought along the required alternate gases.

solo diving training vs tech training

Yeah, it's ironic but not unreasonable for an operator to deny solo diving to a tech certified diver. One problem is that the tech diver may not have an auxiliary gas source and therefore shouldn't dive solo. For that case the operator is acting responsibly for denying the solo dive.

Just hit my 100th dive—besides diving, what’s next for skill development?

I didn't read all the posts in this thread so please forgive me if this has already been mentioned. With 100 dives you can now pursue solo diver if you have rescue. You can get this cert from either PADI or SSI. The skills you will learn are gas planning and how to dive and manage an alternate...

Riding GF99 instead of mandatory/safety stops

There hasn't been any scientific study done on bubble models that incorporate deep stops that I know of. The shift away from bubble models is partly due to the simpler dissolved gas model and the ease in modifying the model through GF's for personal use. Bruce Weinke who has since passed away...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

If you are going to do only two dives for the day and you are not going to extend your bottom time nitrox probably isn't necessary. This is most common during DM group led dives. Where nitrox makes a big difference is when doing multiple dives a day (more than two) and especially when diving...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

One danger of setting your dive computer for air when diving nitrox is exceeding the MOD. The MOD for air is 187 ft. The MOD for EAN 36 is 95 ft. Your DC will never give you a warning for exceeding the MOD of the gas you are actually using.

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

I've been nitrox certified for many years. In terms of the mechanics of putting together your equipment, the actual swimming underwater, and the feeling of diving nitrox (at least for me), there is no difference between nitrox and air. Definitely review the course materials especially MOD and...

    BP&W Surface Swim to Vertical

Without seeing the 14 lbs of weights on your DUI harness my guess would be that while swimming horizontally those weights have shifted forward in their pockets so that they hang below your center line. This will make moving to the vertical position harder as you have to "pick up" those weights...

Riding GF99 instead of mandatory/safety stops

Actually the VPM bubble models were designed not to eliminate bubbles (see the bolded text in your post) but to keep those ever present bubbles from exceeding a critical size.

If you use a long hose configuration...

Well, that is the issue - ignored gear. I wish every diver had your dedication to testing their equipment. I routinely on every dive at the beginning of the dive switch to my alternate and breath at least 30 seconds from it. If it doesn't work correctly I abort the dive. You can't prevent a...

    Standardization of Hand Signals

If you adopt the NACD meaning for the one handed thumbs up signal just remember it's a demand signal. It cannot be ignored by your buddy. Buddies should not ask for a followup explanation assuming one can be given. Explanations can wait for the surface. Usually, a diver has a problem that is not...

    Standardization of Hand Signals

I agree with you that one handed signals to show gas remaining is better as with all other hand signals. What I and my buddy have used for gas remaining is to signal just the first two numbers. 2,550 psi becomes 2...5, 2,000 is 2...0, 900 is 9...0, 500 is 5...0, etc. From the context of the dive...

If you use a long hose configuration...

This is a right side view of my rig. The right side waist strap is hanging down toward the bottom. Just above the D-ring I've mounted a ScubaPro pocket. It has a velcro closure at the top which is shown to the right in the photo above. I keep a slate in it and sometimes a mirror if I'm doing...

    Disturbing trend in diving?

So, for those of you who do not know what NFL means apart from the three hours of hysteria we just witnessed a month ago; it means No Fun Limit. It can occur at any time but mostly rears its ugly head when NDL has gone to zero and you realize you don't have enough gas for those mandatory deco stops.

Question How to Calculate First and Final Stop Depths When Implementing Gradient Factors in Bühlmann ZHL-16C?

Sure, I would be open to a video conference. I have zoom and can use other software as long as it runs on Linux. Even though you are responding in English I have to state up front that I do not speak or understand Spanish. Furthermore, any information or advice I give you is solely based on...

Question How to Calculate First and Final Stop Depths When Implementing Gradient Factors in Bühlmann ZHL-16C?

Attached is another paper by Erik Baker, P.E. that includes tables for the m-values and slopes. It also includes formulas for computing the a and b coefficients.

Question How to Calculate First and Final Stop Depths When Implementing Gradient Factors in Bühlmann ZHL-16C?

    Here's how I did it: 'calculate the first stop at GFLo using the formula: ' D = ((P - GF * a) / (GF / b - GF + 1)) - Psb 'where: D = depth, P = total gas pressure, GF = gradient factor = GFLo, 'a = coefficient a, b = coefficient b, Psb = ambient surface pressure 'the first...

Question Am I wrong to not want a modern computer?

After reading the above couple of posts I couldn't resist posting this: In the early days of Windows the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, said this at a computer exposition: “If General Motors had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars...

    Attitudes Toward DIR Divers

All those divers standing on and bumping into the reef, regardless of who trained them, are DIR divers! In their case D.I.R. = Diving Intentionally Reckless.

    Crotch straps are awesome!

When I started diving with a BP/W it came with a 2 inch wide crotch strap. While I didn't get chafing (I dove with a wet suit) it didn't feel comfortable. I finally ordered and installed a 1-1/2 inch wide crotch strap that got rid of all the discomfort. You can probably get a 1 inch strap. If...
