    How unsafe is Venezuela really?

I'm with phillybob on this one. With all of the other amazing places to dive in this hemisphere, why would anyone want to pump any money into an economy run by a two-bit petty wannabe Stalinist like Chavez? I won't even buy gas from Citgo. I certainly feel compassion for the plight of...

    Catalina & Bat Islands

Several of us spent Thanksgiving week at Ocotal. We also met a large group from the Denver area there. We had an absolute blast. We did several of the local dives, plus Catalina and Bats -- prices were around $65 extra for each of those, but well worth it -- giant mantas, many bull sharks, and...

Difference b/t hotfoot and artic socks?

I have both. The arctic socks go with the two-piece arctic undersuit -- can be layered over the base layer for colder water. The hotfoot socks are a bit thinner, and can be used by themselves or under the arctics. Depending on temp, together or separate they keep your feet nice and toasty.

    Warmest 5 mil gloves?

I'd recommend you check out the Fourth Element 5mil gloves - 3mm Gloves and 5mm Neoprene Gloves for SCUBA diving : Fourth Element I've been using them for a while, with my dry suit, and they are the warmest I've used short of a dry glove.

    Ocotal trip report

Here are a few pics, both below and above water. Sorry for the quality of the uw ones -- vis was just not conducive to great art -- but what a rush!

    Ocotal trip report

I'm sure we saw each other -- we flew back to Miami with one of the guys from your group. Yes, I'm sure Sebastian was talking about our siting. I was able to get some photos of it as it soared above me (which I'll post as soon as I can). Looked like a jumbo jet. I'm sure we saw the same bulls...

    Ocotal trip report

Just returned from a week at Ocotal. Can't say enough good things about it. Weather was perfect, and the people were absolutely awesome -- very attentive and gracious. The staff at the dive shop was great -- friendly and knowledgeable. Also not too restrictive -- very much let us do our own...

    Favorite Dive app on iPhone?

In no particular order: iScubaPlan -- doesn't replace a computer, but it's nice to be able to do some manual dive planning. Dive Spots -- great for locating wrecks and other points of interest. Nitrox Tools and Trimix Tools -- more specialized than iScubaPlan. Again provide a nice...

    Drysuit config questions

I have a Bare Tech tri-lam, and went with a Dive Rite strap on pocket instead. No complaints -- I use it when I need it, and leave it off when I don't.

Need help finding website or liveaboards available for 100% private charter.

Try the Cuan Law. It's a 105 foot trimaran. We spent a week on her in February, and it was incredible. I know they will rent out the entire boat. Here's their web site: Luxury Sailing in the British Virgin Islands

I'm screwed, trying to find a place

USVI - either St. Thomas or St. John. A little too touristy for me, but they have what you're looking for -- plenty of diving and shore activities.

Converting a DC1200 Elite to Maxx

The lens adapter ring has space for two fiber optic cables. Look at yours and you'll see that it's made to take one from either side. Only other thing you'll need to do is remove the macro lens holder if you have that.

Curious about drysuits. How dry are they?

I just got my dry suit and cert this past Spring, so I'm by no means an expert. My LDS, however, strongly recommended a Bare trilam, which I ended up getting. I've used it several times and it's been great. The only "wetness" I've experienced has been from my own sweat. In speaking with several...

    Diving in Seattle area...

My wife and I have a place in Seattle. We also have friends who have a place on Lake Cushman in Hoodsport. The diving is awesome all around Puget Sound and Hood Canal. I'm attaching a guide to some of the best spots. Enjoy!

    Thoughts on Our World Underwater

I can only speak for myself and a couple of friends, as consumers. Last year was the first time I went to the Rosemont show. It was packed with people and exhibitors, and we had a blast. The great thing was that I was able to get a lot of first hand info on dive sites around the world (of...

    New gear purchase survey 2010

Bare Tech tri-lam dry suit. Bought based on my LDS's strong recommendation. My wife and I live just outside Chicago and also have a place in Seattle -- so Lake Michigan and Puget Sound diving will be very much in our future. I've taken the Bare out several times and it's a pleasure to use.

    Mares X-Stream Fins

Just got a pair recently and had the same issue. "A bit of energy" sure is right - thought I'd break a finger! Finally did get the straps off in the way suggested. Haven't tried the fins yet (going on a trip later this month), but they came very highly recommended by my LDS.
