    Mares Icon HD upgrade...

RF battery drain, like BT battery drain, is not an unheard of issue. I noticed the same thing with my Icon. While not a fix, a simple workaround is to get an external USB battery pack. I have one for my iPad/iPhone called a New Trent IMP1000. It's about the size of a deck of cards. Tried it on...

    Divers Diary for Mac

I posted this on another thread, and sent a pm to Zak O'Hara, but have not received a response. Anyway, recently got my new Icon HD with AI, and I use a Mac. Trying to locate the install file for the Divers Diary, but the link on the Mares download page only leads to a small text file. Does...

    Mares Dive Computer Tech Assistance

Zak: I just picked up my new Icon Net Ready. Looking for the Mac Diver's Diary. The link on your download page is only to a small text file. Could you tell me where the file can be located? Mike

    Political correctness run amok

We live in an age where every group seems to have some treasured practice that is not only beyond regulation -- it is considered racist, small minded, bigoted or just plain ignorant to even talk about it. Here's the latest chapter: Is a California Shark Fin Ban Racist? - Civil Rights - Law and...

    wrist mount torch

I assume you mean something on a Goodman mount or glove. I recommend one of the Titan Sculas, either 10w or 25w, from Hydro Light. Jeff at Divesafety is a great guy, and you get incredible personal service.

    Photo Editing

The big problem is your price range. $350 to $550 will not get you much horsepower, especially in a laptop. You can't touch a Mac anywhere near those prices. I switched to Macs a couple of years ago, and would never go back. Things work, they work well, and you just don't have the headaches that...

    Hello from cold snowy Illinois

Jeff-- I also live most of the time just outside of Chicago. I know it's an expensive proposition, but I highly recommend that you get trained in and then pick up a dry suit. It will extend your diving "season" to all year round. I got mine (Bare HD Tech) about a year ago, and never looked...

    Hi from Seattle

I'd recommend Costa Rica -- the left coast. Numerous dive ops and great diving -- lots of different critters. People are very friendly. Several of us spent a week in Ocotal last November -- highly recommended. BTW, I'm also 1/2 from Seattle (half my time here and the other outside of Chicago).

Mares , ScubaPro , Aqualung or Cressi BC's

I'm a big fan of Mares. Great quality, easy to use, and do have integrated weights, although I think it's one of the easier to use designs out there. Plenty of D rings. For best all around I'd recommend the Dragon. My wife and a close friend have Oceanic Probes, which are also very good, but for...

    How unsafe is Venezuela really?

I think we've both wasted enough time on this. I've made my opinion and principles clear, and believe I'm entitled to them. Not sure what your point has been, but again, you're entitled to it. Enjoy your diving Mossman, wherever it may be. Phillybob - hope you and I have a chance to cross...

    How unsafe is Venezuela really?

No phillybob, I really think Mossman should go to Venezuela since he thinks it's so great. From what I see from some of the other posters on this thread, I think he'd really enjoy it. Now Mossman, since this Board is all about sharing views and experiences, I think you should volunteer for this...

    Lightroom vs. Aperture

I've been using Aperture for a while. Apart from some higher end editing features, it's also superb for cataloging. Recently got Photoshop CS5, and they work seamlessly together. I believe the same is true of the Aperture/Elements combo. Highly recommended.

Wow! Dive Log now on my Mac.

ITG -- you may want to check out the Mares forum. I've been researching the issue for some time, and have decided to get an Icon HD once the air integration feature is available -- should be this spring. They also note that they have hired a new IT team to develop a Mac version of their dive log...

    Need a recommendation

Thank you Mark. Tossing around a lot of ideas - way too many options. I just thought I'd start with the D70 since I already have it, but it may just make more sense to keep it as a topside secondary and get a whole new rig for uw. I'm pretty passionate about shooting so it's not as if it won't...

Thank you Chris. From your profile it looks like you really know your stuff. Much appreciated.

    Need a recommendation

Mark -- I don't log most of my dives -- just every now and then when I want a location stamp or to keep a record of a particular thing I've seen. I've had plenty, and feel totally comfortable with moving up to a DSLR.

    Need a recommendation

I've gotten to the point where I'm considering upgrading my uw photo rig. I've been an amateur topside photographer for many years, but have only been shooting uw for about a year -- using a Sea Life DC1000 as a starter kit to get practice and experience. My primary land camera is a D700. I'd...

    Trilam on and in wrecks

I've been using a Bare Tech since May, and it's built to take a lot of punishment -- not that you want to go out of your way to beat it up. Highly recommended.
