Outside of a training-type dive, I believe that the DM shouldn'thave to be babysitting newer divers and making sure they don't hurt themselves. By the same token, however, I think that a lot of the situations that people have been griping about on other threads regarding DMs could have been...

Any chance that you could do the classroom and confined water stuff at home, and do your checkout dives on a referral once you get to the Bahamas (jealous!)? That may be a good solution with the time restrictions, but still get enough repetition in benign conditions.

I also believe that the (print) magazine and newspaper industry have to be hurting by the internet, especially more since mobile devices are providing more and more web content.

I'm in the 30-39 range, but with one daughter and one on the way, it looks like they're going to be occupying as significant portion of my life for the next 18+ years. Six more years before I can get the older one certified...she already swims like a fish!

I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this thread. My first daughter is only 4, but she swims like a fish and is really looking forward to diving when she's old enough.

I may be pretty new at the sport, but I can't see myself agreeing with this statement. Price is another story, though. The highest of the high end equipment, with the price tag to go with it, (if by your statement is high "quality" gear) isn't necessarily safer that the garden variety...

That is really cool. There was a fairly recent article in National Geographic that compared the intelligence of various animals to human beings, one of which was the octopus, and it did discuss that they do get "bored" and do things to amuse themselves.

John, Thanks for sharing this experience with us. It's amazing what an unfamilair environment can do to a person. Despite the feelings of panic you had, it seems like you handled yourself really well.

I have to agree with Beachlover there. Be safe and have fun. As a new diver, I know there's some level of comfort being able to dive with one or more experienced divers. Perhaps there's a local dive club in your area that goes out on a somewhat regular basis? Something that might be...

Is it the standard eRDP, or the new eRDP ML (multi-level)? I'm really notsure that going away from the tables completely is a good idea. The eRDP's may be splash-proof, but it's not something that you can take down with you on a dive.
