Planned deco on a recreational dive?

Yeah, but the actual number is probably more like one case per several thousand recreational dives, or less.

High Pressure Fibre Tanks for shore diving???

You can carry the weights separately, for one.

Is the PADI SMB specialty a waste of money?

Ah, there's the disconnect. Someone mentioned that it went into effect in 2014, but my course was in June 2014, so technically not required, though he probably knew it was coming...

switching from AL tank to Steel Tank

This is exactly the method I used when I went to a HP117, and it was perfect without any other adjustments. Though it took me 2 dives to get the 117 down to 500 psi so I could actually check my end-of-dive buoyancy.

Is the PADI SMB specialty a waste of money?

Yeah, I know. Though in this particular case, it was a CESA that I didn't do very well, though I did survive <G>. Removing and replacing my mask, using the reg with no mask, etc, were no trouble at all. Probably because I am quite comfortable in the water, and have spent tons of time under...

Your Most Innocuous, Yet Memorable Dive

I love Scuba Club Cozumel. I don't know how their house reef compares to other resorts' house reefs, but it's nice for sure.

Is the PADI SMB specialty a waste of money?

That's possible, but before throwing my instructor under the bus, I must confess that reading this thread, I was thinking of a DSMB, not a SMB. I am certain we never did a DSMB, but am not so sure about whether or not we deployed one on the surface. I did deploy one on my very first...

    Slightly big BCD

You pretty much always have to cinch down the straps once you're submerged. That's my experience, anyway...

Is the PADI SMB specialty a waste of money?

When I took it in 2014, it was not covered, so it's a quite recent addition.

Are airline bag fee's changing gear ownership

I've done plenty of flying over the last couple of years, and have found that as soon as you add a baggage charge to the other airlines, the total cost is nearly identical to Southwest's, so if I'm flying with one or more checked bags, I'm on SW for sure. Now if they would only fly to...

    Breath holding?

Yes, that's true, but personally I wouldn't try it except in a dire emergency. It wouldn't be easy to keep from locking your throat while doing other things.

Why don't "club trip divers" use buddy teams?

My experience in Coz is similar, but not exactly the same. I went with an organized group who mostly knew each other, and the group leader set up the buddy pairs. The way it usually worked is that buddy pairs descended together, but once we got to the bottom and checked that everything seemed...

    Breath holding?

I think every experienced diver holds their breath for at least a short time once in a while. Like the OP, I often hold it when setting up a photograph, to avoid "bubble face". I try to be sure I never ascend while holding it, though...

Feb 19 2017 Cozumel diving fatality

My Cozumel experience has been the same: buddies always ascend together unless briefed otherwise before the dive. The one pre-briefed exception I've seen was on the first dive of a multi-day trip, when my insta-buddy (a fairly experienced diver, with 200+ dives and DM certified) told the group...

Planned deco on a recreational dive?

??? Take a look at your math. If (to pull a number out of my a$$) your risk is normally 1% (1 out of 100 dives), a 25% increase is still only 1.25% (1 out of 80 dives). Not a major increase IMO, though still measurable.

Is it okay to be a quasi-solo diver in certain situations?

Interesting subject, and relates to some other threads about buddies, and more specifically buddying with the DM, as I had to last week. I was in Hawaii for a couple of weeks for work, and had one day off to get a dive in. There were 3 groups on the boat, two of them classes (one wreck, and...

    Honolulu dive ops?

I ended up going with Oahu Divers, and was impresssed. They were very professional and accomodating. They picked me up at my hotel and dropped us off about 10 ft from the boat. The boat and rental equipment were in excellent condition (looked almost new) and it all worked flawlessly. We did...

Diver missing - Motunau Island, New Zealand

Depending on how severe his issue was, and how far away medical was, It might not have saved his life, but would at least have made recovery easier

    Out of air incident.

Or, on can be Open Water (or Advanced Open Water), and be a very experienced diver too (I.E. NOT a beginner) .
