From Atlanta, you're a fairly easy drive to the Destin / Fort Walton Beach area. Bluewater Escape - Destin Scuba Diving & Fort Walton Fishing Charters | Blue Water Escape - as well as a few other local charters are doing lionfish training dives. The larger, commercial dive operators tend to...
As frequent visitor to the bay area, I use Uber or Lyft to get around - about 1/2 the cost of a taxi or less and a better experience. I've stayed at the SF Airport Westin - it's pretty nice and sometimes they run aggressive pricing considering their quality. Lot's of other options - I usually...
Made my 1st trip to Key Largo two weeks ago and enjoyed exploring as many sites as possible over 3 days.
Most of the pictures are from French Reef, Dry Rocks, and the SS Benwood. Current conditions weren't favorable for Molasses Reef so that will have to wait for another time.
Key Largo...
With a few more dives with the camera I would tend to agree Bill - if the flash exposure is manually set for conditions, I think the as-shot jpegs will turn out pretty well. The DC2000 has an external flash sub-mode in the underwater mode that seems to get the white balance of properly exposed...
I recently posted an Album of 'as shot' vs processed images from a Sealife DC2000. I tried to include a broad sample of overall 'marginal' shots to ones that turned out well to give a feel for just how much you could - or couldn't improve things using RAW.
Sorry for the slow reply - it's been a busy week. All of these were taken with the Sealife strobe and then I used the RAW photo processor in Photoshop Elements to make any required adjustments. The 'unprocessed' photos are the default JPGs that the camera produced. I've been using PE...
Just took delivery of the new DC2000 Pro Duo combo and had a chance to dive it today off Destin, Florida.
Very impressive resolution and dynamic range - this is going to be a fun camera!
Attached are some close crops from 2 of the better pictures of the day. If you're curious about just...
And don't forget the Florida Panhandle which is an easy weekend drive for much of the US southeast:
-- Panama City has a large list of wreck dives, most a close boat trip from shore
-- Destin has limestone reefs teaming with fish up through Goliath Groupers
-- Pensacola has the USS Orriskany...
I got a killer deal on a once-used DUI 30/30 from a local Florida shop last fall and have put 25+ dives on since December in water temps from 52F to 72F.
I bought the Scubapro 2-piece (full + shorty) fleece set and use both pieces for temps below 60F and just the full fleece otherwise...
Hope you get great weather - somewhat selfishly I hope to be about 4 miles south of you during those same hours on one of the Destin Dive boats! I'm doing my Rescue Diver with ECS the 4th and 5th next week.
Spotted about 10 smaller lionfish on White Hill and we managed to cull about 6 of them. They're hard to hit with a paralyzer tip when they're smaller than the tip spread. They can hide easy on the reef too.
The liberty ship was crawling in lionfish - easily saw 30 or more including some...
Here's a new album from Sunday at Whitehill Reef and the Thomas Hayward Liberty ship (which are only about 100m apart). Photographed the biggest spotted moray eel I've seen off Destin on Whitehill and ran across the local Goliath grouper on the ship...
I dive with Skeptic14 quite a bit. As long as your budget allows for boat trips, there is a lot to cover between Panama City and Pensacola. Skeptic14's a lot better with the camera than I am, but I shoot a lot of video and post it at: flyingDiver75’s albums | Flickr by dive site.
They're claiming 4 knot speed which should give it good capability if it's sufficiently easy to 'fly' relative to current.
I have an OpenROV at work that I haven't had a chance to dive yet. My concern with the OpenROV is that it appears more designed for use in confined water and shallow...
Most of the local dive operations won't go out in seas over 4'. Your biggest issue with March is that it is still windy season so trips will cancel more often due to conditions.
Out of Destin Pass, the most popular close-in dive sites are:
-- Destin Bridge Rubble (there are 3 main 'stacks' within a few hundred yards of each other)
-- Air Force Barge (about 400yds north of the bridge rubble)
-- Miss Louis Tug - this is a 6ish mile run east from the pass, but in fairly...
SSI E-learning, OW Pool Sessions at Bamboo Reef in San Francisco, OW Dives in Destin, FL with ScubaPro of Northwest Florida. SSI Nitrox with ScubaPro, PADI Dry Suit with ScubaPro
Monterey practice for rental suits seems to be a 2-piece 6.5 - 7.0mm "farmer john" which puts a lot of bulk over the core coupled with a 7mm hood. If you're in the 150 - 180lb range, expect somewhere between 30 - 35lbs of weight with an aluminum tank which will make shore entry / exits a...
