Calling a dive on your buddies behalf?

I went out with a dive charter a while ago and had an interesting couple of dives. I wanted to hear people’s thoughts on how I might have handled things better. First let me apologise for the long post! A brief outline: I was the only OW diver on the boat, and had about 70 dives at that...

    Ode to the lowly snorkel

The horror stories described in the OP are down to an unskilled diver. It's not like having a snorkel on her head would have improved her situation any. (if you can't get enough air through a top of the range reg, you won't get enough through a snorkel either.) A snorkel after the dive? Why not...

Accepting Responsibility for Your Own Safety

I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that. If people have been taught OW properly, that is exactly what they are qualified to do. Someone with your experience (OW,AOW,Nitrox and Rescue with 35ish dives?) really should be able to manage the things you described above. You really can't rely...

Missing diver @ Bellarine Peninsula on Saturday

This is really sad, I hope they find her alive, or at least can recover her body. At 8m I would think a medical issue would be the only thing keeping her from surfacing? Really terrible news.

Accepting Responsibility for Your Own Safety

When I started diving I wanted to always dive with a DM. In my area that means a Qualified DM (as opposed to a dive guide) that lead a group of people around the site, would keep tabs of them and question their air, and dictate the duration of the dive. This is because my training didn't instil...

Wife doesn't want to dive anymore due to botched freeflowing reg incident

It's an interesting story Cliffpiper and I think you have had to defend yourself a little too much in this thread. How long was your wife breathing off your octo before she bolted? If it was more than a few seconds could she have been suffering from CO2 retention?? I have experienced this once...

    Diving in QLD & NSW

It can get a bit frustrating, but it does have its' benefits too. They do three single tank dives per day, so you can do only one if you are short for time, or all three if you want to make the most of it. I haven't dived with Blue bay so I can't comment on how they stack up. I just checked my...

    Diving in QLD & NSW

Yes that stuff is law in QLD. I have been told the water police can board dive boats and start handing out fines if you don't have it! Not a requirement in NSW but it's always a good idea to have it I think. I would recommend Julian Rocks at Byron Bay Welcome - Sundive Scuba Diving Dive Byron...

July GUE Fundamentals Course - Brisbane

I'd love to do this course but at this stage it's just not possible for me unfortunately. May I ask what it costs? I can PM if you prefer.

    Split fins ?

Don't worry too much about what type of fins you buy. Chances are you'll have three or more sets within twelve months:) I use stiff paddles (OMS Slipstreams) I Used to use Quattros' which were quite good. I have tried splits, you feel like you are going fast, but diving isn't a race. Try and...

    Regulator angle

I had a similar issue to the Op. I switched to a 24" miflex LP hose and a sea cure mouldable mouth piece. That helped a lot with the comfort of the reg. Then I switched to a 5' hose and it got a little bit better again:)

    Invasive species in Oz

Christmas in FNQ?? 'Cool' isn't the word that springs to mind!! You can leave your winter coats at home:) I don't know much about the diving in the areas you visiting, but I hope you have a blast here.

differences in men and women while diving

Am I missing something? Why do you insist? If I need help I will ask. If you see me struggling and offer, I might say 'yes thanks' or, as I have done in the past, 'no thanks, I want to do this on my own, but thank you anyway' One of the most annoying scuba experiences I have had to date was...

Adreno T30 Wing Kit - Anyone have any experience with these?

mdeere1991 is on the board and he uses one. He sometimes posts over in the Australia section http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/australia/419216-brisbane-divers-fancy-gc-seaway-excursion-3.html. For what they are I think they're pretty good. I have DSS and like that the wing can very easily be...

    Scary OW certification weekend

I'm glad it all worked out ok for you, and that you were checked by a medical professional. I totally agree with the other posters recommending you do some more diving before your big trip. I would suggest hiring an instructor to help you work through your skills again, even if it does cost a...

    Posting photos in Threads

Sorry about this but I am trying to pull photos out of a file on my desktop. What do you mean by 'images in the gallery'? I don't know what I did wrong but when I tried the click and drag discussed in that vid and tried to post it gave me an error message. Quero said it was because I had just...
