Black coral shown to take thousands, not hundreds, of years to grow...

A recent study has shown that a deep water black coral (Leiopathes) collected off Hawaii was 4265 years old, while a golden coral (Geraridia) collected from the same area was 2742 years old. That makes the black coral the same age as the pyramids! Biologists previously assumed that the rings...

Anyone have an Invicata Subaqua watch?

Just cut to the chase and get yourself a Seiko. I recently grabed a Seiko SBBN007 (the 'Tuna Can'): it's waterproof to 300m and is a very, very solid lump of steel. Picked one up from SieyaJapan for $530 and been very happy with it: had it down to 170 ft no problems If you want a...

    KBR Resort vs. Lembeh Resort

I've stayed in KBR and loved it. I certainly didn't notice it being 'run down'. The staff and DM's were very helpful, the 3-4 boats going out each had only 4-6 divers each, and they served sweets and snacks when we arrived back at the beach. They also had a dedicated camera room. Its one of...

    Aussie Diving March 15 - 31st

Wow - thats way cool: shaking hands with an occy. I'm suitably jealous! Where were you diving? BTW: I remember someone posting a passing comment last year about a good Oz website/shop to source tanks - but I can't remember who it was or which shop. Any one have any...

    Non-technical dive-planning software?

I just use an Excel spreadsheet: one page for SAC calculations, a second for air consumption for the planned profile. The calculations are not hard and it's a nice exercise in dive planning to do it yourself. If your needs change you can add NDL's, pO2's, OTU's, %CNS, EAD's, run times, best...

SB Invade the Rock 2010... when and where.....

March sounds fine by me. As for where, hhmm, I wouldn't mind if the next Invade the Rock was held in: Southwest Rocks, NSW; Ningaloo Reef, WA; Lady Elliot, QLD; on a Coral Sea Liveaboard, QLD; Eaglehawk/Tasman Peninsula, TAS; Bicheno/Bay of Fires, TAS; Margret River/Albany/HMS Swan, WA...

    Dismayed & Bewildered...

I haven't seen such behaviour on any QBR liveaboards. All the multiday liveaboards I've been on do an excellent job of enforcing a 'look but don’t touch' policy. Still – a few of the dayboats out of cairns may be a different matter. Many are cattle boats that take dozens (and...

How long is it since you dived?

I wouldn't sweat the small breaks. Diving, if looked at over a lifetime, tends to be cyclical. There's going to be years when you live to dive, and are free to chalk up a 100+ dives a year. There's going to be years when you are so busy with work or the kids that you hardly get a chance...

SB Invade the Rock '09 - Fish Rock that is....

Thanks for that, and outstanding photos Almity by the way. Can't wait to see your vid sas or the flickr photos: unfortunately out where I am at the moment I can't download videos and can't seem to access most sites. Can't wait for the next Dive the Rock! Cheers, Rohan.

    Difference In Dive Gear Brands

G'day there - welcome to the board! If you are only ever going to be diving near your local dive shop, if that shop will always be around and will still be dealing in Apollo in 10 years time and if you are certain you will never ever move anywhere else, then maybe go with the Apollo reg...

    I need your eyeball

Picture 1 is around a stop overexposed, maybe 1.5 Picture 2 is spot on to maybe 0.3 of a stop underexposed. This depends on which monitor I look at it with as well: my laptop is a stop or so less bright than my secondary lcd screen. Laptop LCD's certainly seem to dim over time...

Stitching photos to make panoramic pic

BTW - there are several underwater photography forums out there that have some good tips and examples. Check out this wetpixel thread for a start, while here is a great wreak panorama. Cheers, Rohan.

Stitching photos to make panoramic pic

Nice shots Swankenstein! If you're taking a panorama of a long objects, such as complete wreak profile, lays a line down parrallell to the subject first and then traverses along it while taking the photos: this ensures that all your pictures are taken using the same direction, distance and...

Is there a signal for "Out of no-stop time"?

Similar to Ted - Tap computer. Give fingers for number of minutes remaining. Give either 'ascend' (thumb up)and 'level off' (move hand side to side, palm down) or 'come up' (repeat lifting flat hand, palm up) if I'm already higher than them.

Any way to buy a Mares first stage all by itself?

I've been using a v32 for 10 years and thought I'd get a second one to keep it company and put them both on my doubles. I contacted the local distributor in Queensland, Australia, and she informed me that they only sell these regs as a package (1st and 2nd stage, with a shared serial...
