DIR primary hose length for open water, no overhead

I think 7' is the way to go but completely agree that for an easy open water dive it doesn't really matter. I don't like the way the 5' fits and have seen plenty of others with similiar issues. 7' hose tucks in the waistband easily and then you never have to switch out hoses. But, if 5' works...

DIR primary hose length for open water, no overhead

This kind of advice makes it even harder to tell the strokes apart from the Canadians. ;)

    MOD stickers from Lowe's

Never had a problem with any paint coming off. Are you using painted or shot blasted tanks? All of mine are shot blasted (or whatever the term is for bare tanks). I would expect it to be easier to take off of painted tanks. It may also be a matter of the paint you use but I doubt it. I...

    MOD stickers from Lowe's

Can of spraypaint and 3" stencils. Where the numbers get changed frequently, duct tape and permanent marker.

    DIR Grand Cayman

While the typical OW dives with Ocean Frontiers are not strictly DIR run, it is the best open water dive operation I have ever used in the carribean. To give you an idea of the quality of the owners, I would have said that before Fraser started working there. I have not done any mix dives with...

    Bulk Bolt Snaps

I don't have a decent local dive store so I rarely recommend using them. However, for bolt snaps sometimes you are better off going to a H dealer and picking out the few snaps you need since you can test them and make sure you get a good one. Nix has worked for me when I am ordering a few...

    GUE - Fundies?

My only GUE course was one of the very first T2 courses ever. I just needed a mix card and it wasn't very demanding so I was able to actually pay attention to what was going on with the class far more than say my original cave certification. This was at a time when fundies did not exist. Both...

    Argon bottle setup?

You don't need a SPG on an argon bottle while in the water so it is unnecessary equipment. You don't take stuff you don't need in the water with you. Check the bottle before you get in the water. If you have a bottle failure and it is cold enough to necessitate argon, borrow your buddies...

Single tank DIR - 5' or 7' long hose

So, you guys are now worring about the situation where your buddy is over 6' tall, he is out of gas, and you have to pass through a restriction that is so small you have to be exactly single file and keep your legs perfectly straight to get through it. 8' hose is a solution in search of a...

    Stowing a (compact) camera

If it is just something you want to carry along and use occassionally, best choice is clipped into a pocket if it will fit. For most camera dives that is the focus of the dive and you will be carrying it most of the time. With no stages, you have plenty of options for temporary storage since...

    DS4 Hose Routing

Run the backup under the corrugated hose. With AL 80s route the hoses behind the wing when using APEX. There is not enough room with 80s to really do it the other way properly without really stuffing the wing in between the two. With larger steel tanks, in front of the wing works best.

    Cave line vs ziptie

It is against forum policy for extras from the Lord of the Rings films to post here. You are about as DIR as batman was (the guy that talked Sheck into killing himself since most of you won't know who batman is). The DIR solution to an inability to make proper risk assesments is to take up golf.

    Cave line vs ziptie

Do you really want to argue with me about this stuff because you clearly don't have a clue. Breakaway clips on the long hose were used for quite a while and are still not a deal killer. However, they proved to be too much trouble since the orings wear out so quickly and now are not used very...

    Cave line vs ziptie

Really, when was this? Because I can assure you that zipties were out of favor before the term DIR even existed.

    DIR compliant regulator?

On deep dives with high helium mixes (where anything breathes well) and on OW dives where the time on the backup reg and stress would be fairly low for more experienced divers there used to be a preference for "crappy" backup regs because they didn't free flow every time you bumped them or the...

DIR DMs? What do you do?

Use smaller words. I had to look that one up. If you wore the freaking hood you would have kept your core warmer and made it 90 minutes so I think the example was appropriate.

DIR DMs? What do you do?

Even at 1/6th Lamont should be getting at least 90+ minutes at an average depth of 20' unless he is a raging stro....nevermind.

    DIR compliant regulator?

Easily confused with the green O2 bottle poodle jackets. C'mon. You know this. Stop trolling. ;)

DIR DMs? What do you do?

Why bother to get in the water if the dives are going to be so short you can go without a hood. ;)

Why SPG on hip and not arm?

I have never seen either of those guys ever do that and I would guess I have around 100 dives or so with Danny alone. Are you sure you didn't seem them clip to their crotch ring which pulls the stage in?
