    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

Thanks for the tip on Tim's bags. For $25 I am going to give the 35 a shot and see if it works. I may pick up the Halcyon to compare as well. Hopefully, the Carter will work. It sounds like the 35 works better than the 50.

    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

Thanks for the info. I have the Carter 50 but it doesn't stand up well. Is the 35 easy to get to stand up straight? I don't want to have to "hang" from the float to keep it upright. The site says a 4 lb weight will make all of them stand up. That just isn't true with the 50.

    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

There is nothing wrong with the halcyon bags, I just prefer open bottom and traditionally Halcyon stuff has been inflator hose fill. I haven't seen a semi closed open bottom bag that works as well as the carter ones which effectively seals once you fill it. I will probably order the Halycon...

    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

Well, there is your problem, you are diving in cold water. :D Launching the raft is funny, it sort of unfolds on the way up and breaches the suface before it flops over. Holding onto the thing while getting enough air in it isn't easy. My 10' carter flops over and doesn't lose a drop so I...

    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

rjack, that is a neat device for a stroke. Actually it is kind of an interesting solution. If I am rigged out for a deco dive and diving dry, using the inflator hose isn't really an issue. I just think it is an unnecessary entanglement hazard and since I often pass the bag to a less...

    SMB - Lift Bag Choices

There have been a million threads on this. Sorry for the repeat request. Time for a new "easy tropics dive" SMB. Criteria: 1) I prefer the opened bags that self seal, don't want to mess around with the inflator hose ones. But, lets get all of the recommendations out there. 2) I have...

UTD and GUE protocol and procedural differences

The big "difference" is that GUE has a strong cave background and UTD does not. Ratio Deco only works for a relatively short time frame band. So, it isn't useable on most cave dives. This means, in my experience, that most cave divers are going to put more emphasis on knowing how to shape...

    Using Din Adapter?

No safety concern. Only issue is they push the first stage further out from the tank and this can create position issues for some people - reg hits their head, etc. I use them and find them more reliable than switching the actual connector since doing this all of the time makes it more likely...

Is the DIR reg config safe when diving with rec trained divers?

Yeah, photographers hate me. The rest of the gear being black doesn't affect pictures/ video much. But, an all black suit makes it almost impossible to get good quality stuff. Look at all of the WKPP video stuff. While red/black used to be the standard DUI color, many of the guys in those...

    Multi-day repetitive recreational profiles?

This is definately the conservative approach. For recreational diving, what I think works much better and keeps the dive fun as opposed to a mini deco dive is to just do them all as ML dives, 20-40 min at 100-90, slowly moving to 70-60 depending on the site, 5-30 or so minutes at that depth...

    Multi-day repetitive recreational profiles?

You will find that 5 dives a day for multiple days is just too much to be enjoyable. 4 nice 1+ hour dives is all you can comfortably get in on a liveaboard. Maybe a night dive on one of the days. Actual deco profiles are less important than staying completely hydrated and ticking all of the...

    Cave 1 rule changes

Fair point on jailhouse. I forgot about the first part of the entrance before you get to the bottom of the breakdown pile. I was working off of the flawed, if we can get scooters in there, it is appropriate rationale. I get a bit skewed in my views since the entrance to jailhouse is easy...

    Cutting tools

The Z knife is garbage. How does the benchmade hold up in the water?

    Cave 1 rule changes

Well, I usually head down there at non-peak diver times anyway. Just after Christmas, peak hurricane season, etc. Having said that, I have gone whole weaks without even seeing a snorkeler. You just have to dive the sites that are a wee bit off the beaten path. I don't think I have been in...

    Cave 1 rule changes

I think it is pretty close without a stage. I have never done that dive with a stage. If you set it up and did two dives so you knew the circuit it is a really easy circuit. Doing the whole loop on just thirds without a stage is probably pushing it a bit. Lamont, Another dive you didn't...

    Cave 1 rule changes

The jump on the left side is the circuit I was talking about. It is at the fang basically. If you stayed left at both T's on the Madonna and followed the line to the end, you would end up back at the jump you see there. I don't think there are any Ts in between but there may be. I don't...

    Cave 1 rule changes

Temple of Doom is a good dive. Make someone do it with you. I have run the full circuit on 1/3rds but that is with access to full backgas. You should be able to see a lot of the cave. Have you done jailhouse yet? It starts with a T and I think you need to do a few others, but it is pretty...

Shutdowns - breathing down vs. purging

Uhm, you don't shut down posts for LP connector failures, which are not uncommon. You disconnect the LP inflator hose. The little o-rings in a HP hose are also a common failure point and in many situations are a terminate the dive event but not a shut down the post event.

    Cave 1 rule changes

If I was so badly seperated from a teammate that we were passing navigational aids and exiting, they are getting a note on the line with a cookie so the pulling cookies thing is unimportant. More realisticly, I am not diving with anyone where this has any real possibility of happening short of...
