DIR- GUE Input and Advice on my GUE Training Path and GUE Courses

It sounds as if cost isn't a huge issue. Given that, go take fundamentals now. That course, more than any other is about learning. The card doesn't matter until you know you want to go further. Do it in a single tank. It will teach you to nail the fundamentals and coming back and later...

DIR- GUE Input and Advice on my GUE Training Path and GUE Courses

Just have fun. It sounds like you may be spending too much time practicing in the pool. If you are having fun great keep it up. If it is a grind just go dive. Loving diving is what is important. I am old. All of they guys I started diving with that were about the next deeper dive or a...

DIR- Generic New Santi Avatar Drysuit ordered—full review to follow soon.

In theory you can move the left arm dump valve up higher with a right shoulder zip which is nice. But since they usually don’t I don’t see any reason for it to matter which shoulder the suit zips.

    Fins for tech diving

My kids, who are both small, have used jets in single tanks since they were 10. Jets work for everything.

Cave Diving Backup Lights / Rechargeable Batteries

Brown would be the old halogen bulbs. The newer leds are way brighter.

Cave Diving Backup Lights / Rechargeable Batteries

Alkaline batteries can but put on a volt meter and you know whether they are still good. LiIon are way better then the prior alternatives but you still can’t use the voltage to gauge burn time as definitively as with alkaline. Fully onboard with carrying a second Li Ion primary but don’t...

    Cave Diving In Texas?

If Goodenough is still at 500’ it hasn’t been pushed since Chuck did it. I have never experienced the flow that cave has anywhere else. We installed a pull line to get to the restriction because Gavins could not overcome the flow and it is a really short cave. Basically a deviated sinkhole...

    Barbados Dive Operator Recommendations

I have dived with Barbados Blue and had the same experience of a mostly sand dive. Barbados just doesn’t have spectacular reefs. The reefs are on a relatively flat bottom and get progressively deeper with sand in between. I think there are generally three reefs. Vis can be pretty variable...

    Teric Review

I have been asking for the Surface GF function since the Petrel. Glad to hear Shearwater finally added it. Hopefully, it will be a software update for the perdix and petrel.

    Barbados Dive Operator Recommendations

I have used Hightide several times because they are the only place on the island that can provide nitrox. They have picked me up from ridiculously far from their operation. Nice group and service is excellent. Actual diving is fairly basic typical Barbados pontoon boat. I would recommend them...

Multiple Stage Bottle Positioning for Cave

Assuming no mix, so heavy when full, second bottle is nose clipped when scootering and both are chest clipped when swimming. If both are chest clipped, breath the outside bottle because in a cave unless some complex circuit are are going to drop it at your 1/2 + whatever mark (or move it to a...

GF99 on Surface in Future Update

I realize that. Given I don't use the computer for deco information and it is more of a guide, it would be nice to be able to see the actual information in real time. Seeing what your GF99 would be on the surface as of any point is more useful for no-deco dives.

GF99 on Surface in Future Update

Would it be possible in a future update to create a display option that shows the GF99 at the surface assuming an instantaneous ascent? Obviously, the minute the last deco stop clears, it is at whatever GF high is set to. But, for no-deco dives or if you want to dive using an aggressive GF but...

    Viking Suits

Vulcanized rubber suits create vastly more resistance in the water. Minor zipper location and proprietary inflation valve issues aside, the inefficiency of moving these suits through the water alone makes them non DIR.

What would you recommend for a bottom timer/depth gauge?

I switched to the Petrel for the reasons you mentioned. It is so big that it sits higher on my arm so I still have some issues getting it far enough away to read. It is much easier to read than the Tech 2g. The Petrel also has the advantage of being very intuitive, not locking you out in...

    Marking Jumps and T's

For caves in Mexico, if you are relying on the permanent line arrows for navigation, then you have already made too many mistakes. What do you want the arrow to point to: (1) the nearest exit 1,000' away through a small silty tannic siphon that opens to a cenote that is impossible/ difficult...

    "5-star" Cozumel hotel options

You are correct. I can't keep up with the name changes. I still refer to it as Plaza Las Glorias.

    "5-star" Cozumel hotel options

Compared to SE Asia hotels that you may be familiar with, the Presidente will be a huge disappointment. If a Shangri-Li is a 5, the Presidente is a 2, maybe. I haven't stayed at the Presidente in more than 5 years. My wife is picky too, but even she eventually decided that the Presidente...

Wikipedia article on "Doing It Right"

I think Appleyard was the subject of one of George's best lines ever - the shaving with a cheese grater one. Anyone from the techdiver list remember?

    Left post rolloff.

Doesn't the avatar combined with the type of questions the OP seems to ask tilt this towards being a bit of a troll even if the OP pretends/ believes he isn't? I have spent hours in caves where a large portion of the dive involved being in passages so small you were either rubbing your chest in...
