Help planning my NC dive trip

There are a few charters that will take you to the U-352 (I recommend Discovery Diving, I'm biased). Regardless of who you use, I would call soon to see if there's any charters going to or maybe put together a charter for that date. The U-85 is off the outer banks and I'm not sure of the...

    Lionfish question...

Not sure about Cozumel specifically, however both species have been identified in the Gulf of Mexico. P. volitans is the most common, P. miles only makes up a small percentage of the population. P. miles has fewer dorsal spines, 10 compared to volitans 13, and they don't have as many spikes on...

    Lionfish question...

They're native to the red sea, indian ocean, south Pacific. Sharks and parasites keep them in check over there, and I would assume that there's a few other fish that prey on them as well.

Water temp off the North Carolina coast and what do you wear?

Surace temp offshore in August is usually in the low 80s, but that's not where your diving. The bottom temp at 100ft depends, It'll be in the 70s one week and the next there's big time thermocline and the water is in the upper 60s. So I would bring the suit. I have a 3mil suit I wear in the...

    Mares X-Stream - thoughts?

I dive with them, love them, have about 100 dives with them and no issues. The spring straps are awesome. Super light (they float) and great push on up and down strokes.

    lionfish spearing

Awesome article. I dove with the writer, cool chick and I was one of the Discovery Diving crew that pulled those lionfish and pictured with them (dude in the blue boardshorts, next to Capt Leroy, Captian's Lady)

Help planning my NC dive trip

Discovery Diving has awesome charters, they have a hotel also, Beaufort Harbor Suites, nice place. I really only have experience with Terry (capt. Outrageous V) and Leroy (capt. Captain's Lady). Both stand up operators and the Out V has a great crew, usually steve and dean. Dive sites, there's...

    lionfish spearing

Usually the venom breaks down fairly quickly after the lionfish dies. So after 2 hours the venom should have been pretty much broken down. I've been stuck by a live one and its was definitely a torch and sledgehammer feeling. It was terrible, wouldnt wish it on anyone.

How long does it take to drown?

I would hope the individual would pass out before water entered the lungs. We touch on shallow water blackout (holding your breath, diving down and blacking out before you reach the surface) in our OW classes and you need about 1psi of O2 in your lungs to stay conscious. So I'm gonna venture a...

    Tank ID help

I cant remember off the top of my head, they dont come very often, but i think the working pressure is 2600? The 8*84 is probably a hydro date. If its in line with manufacturer / serial number then its the first hydro date

    Tank ID help

72s and 90s are pretty close in size, at the shop we have both and it seems like the 90s are just a little bigger in diameter. The tanks were made in the late 70s though, not sure if that makes any difference

    Morehead City / Camp Lejeune / Jacksonville - June 24-27 (mid-week)

Vis was good on the Aelous today, they had 40 - 50ft. Which is kind of surprising, seeing how crappy its been all week.

    Do Not Dive Morrison Spring

This is true. I just did a search and there's nothing about morrison being closed. I am suprised that no one has posted anything about it. I definitely agree there should have been signs and the gate locked. I hope all is well.
