Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

Happened to me once in Cozumel, paid extra for large steel tanks and a nitrox blend and our group of 4 was paired with 2 air breathing divers and we were forced to surface long before we were even close to ndl limits. It hasn't happened since because I ask ahead of time and avoid such...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

You're the one who is not understanding. This isn't about the safety of nitrox, it's about limitations imposed on nitrox divers by mixing them with air divers. There are lots of responsible dive operators with whom I've experienced satsifying and enjoyable dives, who either don't mix nitrox and...

    backup computer

In my experience when diving with 2 or more computers which give different results, the most conservative computer, when in deco, clears upon ascent without a need for a stop.

GBR LOB diving as a beginner

Not at all true. Liveaboards are for more serious divers that want to spend most of their time diving. That much said I've seen lots of inexperienced divers on numerous liveaboard trips including 2 on the GBR who can barely control their buoyancy and destroy the bottom substrate with their poor...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

Well to me at least, having to cut my bottom time short by as much as 30 minutes to accommodate air-only divers is a big problem. Especially if the dive charters that mix groups together will not permit buddies to surface after the group (or solo divers on their own). Don't know where you get...

    backup computer

Well no, in fact it doesn't. If you're diving so close to the ndl limits that one of your two (or more) computers puts you in deco you have the option to either ignore it and let it lock you out, or follow the more conservative computer. I know what I'd do.

Tips for backmounting an AL19 pony?

With my slung 19cf pony my BCD corrugated hose touches the bottom before the tank gets even close. And I have the hose snugged up tight.

Tips for backmounting an AL19 pony?

There's no right or wrong, however your stubborn and closeminded attitude doesn't do you any favors. You've chosen to disregard a proven and superior technique because you have decided, without even trying it, that it won't work for you. A constant in many threads besides the highly...

Tips for backmounting an AL19 pony?

No, my setup doesn't look like that. My bottle sits higher, only the valve protrudes from under my arm and it's right up under my armpit not slung low like that one, which appears to be much bigger than a 19cf. Also there are numerous other advantages of a slung bottle besides not having to...

Tips for backmounting an AL19 pony?

No, you only think it does. I backmounted a 19cf bottle for years, over hundreds of dives. I carry a camera with video lights on all dives. I finally decided to try slinging it under/behind my left arm, and now I feel like a freaking idiot for not doing it sooner. The main advantage for me was...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

Many might feel that way but so what? Many people feel the earth is flat too.

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

Right. If it's a mixed gas group led by a DM and all divers must surface together, and do the same surface intervals then Nitrox is almost pointless.

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

Ok that's fair. High gas consumption can negate the potential extended bottom times provided with Nitrox.

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

You are wrong on so many levels. Setting your computer for air WILL shorten many or most dives for all practical purposes, just like most dives can be made longer if it's possible to shallow up regardless of whether the mix is air or Nitrox. Not all dives can be "shallowed up", because in many...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

So what it's common, you keep saying that as if because it's done that way often, it's somehow beneficial. It's not, at least to the diver who is paying for Nitrox and took the course so he or she can use it. It's not about survival it's about longer, more enjoyable dives. Of course there's...

Question How to dive nitrox for the first time

-decide if you'll set your computer to PO2 1.4 or 1.6, I'm partial to 1.6 myself. - understand which dives will benefit from Nitrox, those dives for which Nitrox may possibly offer a slight benefit, and those dives where you're just wasting your money filling your tanks with enriched air...

    Palm Beach Dive Thread

I don't know the maximum dive times for the two reef dives as I only did 25 minutes on the first which was Flower Garden, and I was on the boat for the second and not paying attention to how long the divers were down for (I don't know which one it was).

    Palm Beach Dive Thread

What does the tour boat have to do with any of this? I don't like reef dives, I find them lackluster, relatively devoid of life and just plain boring. What you would do and what I did are not the same thing. Besides I don't even know how to blow bubble rings even if I wanted to spend 45...

    Palm Beach Dive Thread

That's correct, I got one of the two wreck dives I had booked 1.5 months in advance and did a second reef dive that I had no interested in doing, and was subsequently refunded for it. To further clarify- when I spoke to Stuarts the day before to confirm the trip was going to run, they said they...
