    Neutral Buoyancy Hovering

I had to learn good (never perfect) bouyancy for cave diving. I use these techniques: First put just enough air in your bc to feel weightless. Add air very slowly because the point is very exact. Then breathe in and out and see if you don't move much. Then pick a spot, any spot and dwel...

    My first experience with panic

I was doing the same skill. But my instructor didn't pull the regulator out of my mouth, it fell apart! I had the mouthpiece in my mouth and the regulator on it's 7' hose dangling below him. I did get a few breaths off it before it happened so the panic didn't hit. I just swam the 7' (felt...

    Cheap warmer destinations from SoCal

You could dive the Kona Coast in Hawaii. I don't know the flight costs to Hawaii but we dove it in a 3/2 wetsuit with no hood. We left the drysuits at home. Try a travel agent that specializes in Diving to get you the package deal. Your LDS could recommend one. I'd recommend Dive Makai for...

    Taste of the Kona Coast

You can also go to the MacDonalds at the top of the hill. It has a FANTASTIC view. When we were there about 8 years ago, they had a Friday night shrimp special. :)

Solo diving... thumbs up, thumbs down?

I used to go to the boats in S. California a LOT. After some bad mis-haps with "insta buddies" I started diving solo. Then I got into cameras and the on board photo competitions. We all dived solo then, except a few life time couples. Now I hit the jackpot. I have a snuggle buddy and we...

    Things you've found under water

The most interesting was a timex watch with one pin missing. Yep - it was still ticking. And that remark tells you how old I am :(

Reason for diving with two reg's?

I use two regs, one as my primary and one bungied under my chin. When I can I use then on double posts so if one malfunctions (and they do) I can use the other. Also, when an OOA diver comes to you, he is not going to patiently wait for you to sort yourself out for air. The OOA diver is going...

    Lycra suit

Yes - and the wetsuit is supposed to be tight. If you only gained "a little" I'd try the lycra suit. The soapy solution also works. The nice part about that, on the third day of boat diving you still smell good.

    "Tech" diving Certs.

I've been asked by Blackbeard in Fl, I've been asked in Egypt, I've been asked by the Aggressor in Galapagos, I have to put my C# on any sign in I've been on in the S. CA area. I have to show my Nitrox cert to get Nitrox fills except in the shop where I earned the certification. In Cave we...

    Best 'Lesser Known' dives?

Blue Lake S. of Wendover NV, just across the border in Utah. This is a geothermal hot springs so we can dive all winter. The lake is actually two springs with a ridge between. The Salt Lake stores know it and bring their classes to it. But they stay in the closer part of the lake. There are...

Yes - you will get wet anyway :)

    Stress and situational awareness

I think if you have an issue that's uncomfortable you should abort any cave diving. I think you need full attention there. I realize the pull to go anyway in Mexico - the caves there are totally awsome. But when your life depends on any of the awareness, if you have something to diminish...

    Logging and Certifications

If you are planning on diving in the Red Sea - you will need 50 logged dives. It's not for the boat, it's for the Park police. If they board the boat, and it happens a lot, they inspect everyone's dive log. If you don't have it, you cannot do any further diving. And about the Red Sea. I...

    To old to dive?

I started diving at 39. Then I got my Rescue Cert at 54. Then I got an email from a fellow who asked me if I was rec or tec. I responded rec and he responded tec but I'll rec. Now I'm tec. I completed intro to cave in 11/09 and am going back in 11/10 for Apprentice. I did 11 dives in the...

    securing a spool

You might also try winding the spool a little lopsided, with more line on the side your are not attaching the bolt snap to.

    Transplate question...

I use a generic steel back plate with a harness and wing. The nice part about that is since you are "getting fatter" you can carry 6 lbs less lead.

    Business trip to Santa Barbara

Yes - you will need more than a 3 mil. 5 mil farmer john, 6 mil booties and 7 mill hood plus diving gear. I think Truth Aquatics will rent you anything you need from their shop right where the boats dock. Their boat "Truth" does a lot of day trips. You can see about them at...

Holy heavy doubles batman part 2

I'm getting geared up for my Apprentice cave. I dove twin 100's and loved them. Yes Lynn, I strapped them on tight. Just like a fish in water. Then I tried the 130's. Never want to dive them again. I couldn't keep my head up. I'm trying to keep my hands to not move. I was doing dog...

    Store a lift bag?

I store mine in a Dive rite mesh tube with velcro closure on the bottom of my backplate. I did look like a fish out of water until I found out to open the velcro. Dumb me. Now I deploy it like a pro.

    Horizon, Memorial Day weekend

I'm going out on the Horizon over Memorial day weekend. A good friend has it chartered and she has 5 spots left. $500 each. If you've been diving the boats off S. California, that's a deal. If you want to reserve, you can email her at fisanclemente@swfab.com or call her at 858-735-5568...
