Wet Suit, Dry Suit, One regulator

I keep an allen wrench and a couple of spare first stage plugs in my toolbox for exactly this purpose. It takes two seconds, and it beats having 3 feet of hose flopping around.

    help with doubles

Hi snorkl - Restricting the discussion to just equipment: I wanted to get into doubles on the cheap, I wanted to assemble them myself, and I don't mind working with used gear. That said, "all equipment needed" for me broke down as follows: cylinders: used steel 72s (from LDS); $99/each...

    Cancun trip in Jan

I'd be very surprised if a dive operator required (or provided) an SMB. I certainly haven't seen that practice in Cozumel. On the other hand, I think an SMB is an excellent thing to have on you, particularly given Cozumel's high-current conditions. In Cozumel I've generally found myself in...

Will a 10 watt HID cut it in NoCal?

Is that easy to do? I see goodman handles sold under "spare parts" over at Extreme Exposure. But I'd be worried about compatibility between Halcyon and Salvo light heads.

Will a 10 watt HID cut it in NoCal?

The Salvo 10 watt fixed-focus I'm thinking about looks like it comes with a soft, strappy handle -- not a goodman handle. Is that what you have? What do you think about the handle?

Will a 10 watt HID cut it in NoCal?

That's good to hear. On that note: what advantage does variable focus offer? I'd be inclined to save $100 and get the fixed-focus head. And one more thing: do I need to worry about the goodman handle fitting over my cold water gloves? Thanks for all your feedback!

Will a 10 watt HID cut it in NoCal?

Awesome -- thanks! That's exactly what my wallet wanted to hear. Incidentally, what brands are you guys using? I have some experience with a borrowed dive rite, but based primarily on good reviews here and elsewhere, I'm currently leaning toward Salvo. I'm interested in your opinions.

Will a 10 watt HID cut it in NoCal?

Hi all - I'm considering buying a cannister light, mainly so I can take advantage of the passive communication it'll afford. Most of my dives are shore dives in Northern California, so we're talking recreational depths in anywhere from 5' to 50' visibility. Does anyone have experience...

tiny bubbles out my inflator button

Hi all - On my most recent dive, I noticed a stream of tiny bubbles issuing from my inflator button on my (older-style) Halcyon wing. Surely this doesn't require a trip to my LDS. I'm handy. These things *can't* be that complicated. So where should I start troubleshooting? Any...

    anchoring a kayak to kelp

Hm, Bluefish was actually exactly what I had in mind. Well, first things first. I'm going to spend a couple of days fooling around with and free diving off my kayak before I even think about strapping on scuba gear. And even then I aim to make a few test dives in mellow, swim-able spots...

    anchoring a kayak to kelp

So you wouldn't balk at kelp anchoring on a calm day, say, at Pt. Lobos? Ha, exactly the feedback I'm looking for.

    anchoring a kayak to kelp

My only kayak dive to date was a couple of years ago with a borrowed kayak at Lover's Pt. in Monterey. Admittedly the conditions were very calm, and since it was the middle of summer, the kelp was plentiful and strong. To anchor, I wrapped a line three or four times around a BIG armload of...

    anchoring a kayak to kelp

Hm, I'd worry about the entanglement hazard in a kelpy environment.

    anchoring a kayak to kelp

I just bought a kayak that I'm rigging as a platform for scuba and ab diving in northern California. My question is about anchoring: Do folks really just tie off to kelp? Has that ever failed anyone? Are there ways to add redundancy (e.g. loop a line around the kelp, then add a shock cord...

    Air-2 + octo : a viable set-up

Srrh, Sure, it's a viable set-up. (See http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=35569 for a similar discussion.) As with all gear configuration, it's worth considering the pros and cons, but don't let anyone convince you that it's not viable. Best, Steve

place to get wet near SF -- pool, pond, anything

Howdy - I live in Oakland and work in San Francisco, and I'm looking for some place -- any place! -- where I can get wet and maybe work on skills or play with new gear. I generally dive around Monterey or Sonoma, but it's only feasible for me to make such trips a couple of times a month...

*cold* neck collar - drysuit newbie question

Well, the drysuit is a DUI TLS350. It has this sort of neoprene sleeve on the chest area designed to mate with this particular hood. Like I said, it's the hood that shipped with the suit, so somebody thinks they work together. I'll be the first to attest that -- unless you hold very still --...
