Dialing in wetsuit buoyancy at aquatic park (SF)?

Put your wetsuit on and then rinse yourself thoroughly in the shower before jumping in. Then rinse again afterward. Your suit'll survive.

Dialing in wetsuit buoyancy at aquatic park (SF)?

I swim at Aquatic Park, and as a diver, I've definitely been tempted to use it as a nice bit of confined salt water for messing around with gear. But I've always decided against it. For one thing, the visibility is generally about a foot; I usually can't see much past my elbow when swimming...

Pt Lobos closure, Sun, Feb 15

Exactly. That was why I was surprised to see the park entirely shut down.

Pt Lobos closure, Sun, Feb 15

We braved the storm this morning to make good on a pair of reservations at Pt. Lobos, but we pulled up at about 10:30 only to find the park closed. I've never seen that before. Does anyone know the story? We salvaged the day by doing a nice long dive along the pipe to the Metridium...

    Who's selling "blemish" AL backplates?

Easy thar, pardner. It's Northeast Scuba Supply. Who knew the masses were so slaveringly hungry for backplates with the lower cam band cut a 1/2" too high?

    Who's selling "blemish" AL backplates?

Howdy all - Recently I stumbled on an online retailer selling "blemish" aluminum backplates for $50, but now I can't remember the URL. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Steve

    buying used equipment

Nearly all of my gear and all of my buddies' gear was purchased used. That's probably 8 complete sets of gear between us. I'm talking regulators, computers, lights, BCs... the works. Diver0001 has good advice, so I won't repeat it. Use the search function to find more information on this...

    n00b doubles assembly question

Hm, that doesn't make sense to me. Unless you're doing something unusual with the webbing, it won't offer any additional spacing between the plate and the tanks. For what it's worth, here's a pretty good resource for webbing your harness: Webbing a Harness There are a couple of...

    Semidry choices

Bingo. Somebody gave me the same advice back when I was shopping for a semi-dry. I ignored it, and now a couple years of diving later, I have a beautiful Xcel semi-dry collecting dust in the closet Long dives? Multiple dives? Diving when the air temp starts to drop? The Xcel is a great...

Diver drowns, kelp seen as culprit...

For local ab diving, I would just call north coast dive shops and see if any instructors are leading trips. I got into ab diving very informally by hooking up with an instructor from Marin Dive Center; we spent a fun day at Ft. Ross first going over technique and buddy skills, and then we went...

Diver drowns, kelp seen as culprit...

And I'll say again: get some training, or find an experienced mentor. There are excellent classes devoted to free diving technique out there. Not only can you increase your breath-hold times immensely, but -- more importantly -- you'll improve your buddy and rescue techniques.

    Tethers

Huh -- I've never heard of buddy tethers, even in low visibility, and my first thought is definitely "entanglement hazard". Perhaps other folks have experience with them, but I'd probably skip adding a piece of gear -- which will introduce its own whole host of problems -- and focus instead on...

DUI Drysuits. Are they worth the money?

I have been nothing but happy with my TLS350. And I wanted a fully custom cave cut, so I spent a mint. I think there are other excellent drysuits out there -- more on that in a second -- but I have never seen another drysuit, or even another feature on another drysuit, that made me think twice...

    Wetsuits / drysuits

In a wetsuit, you get wet. In a drysuit, you stay dry. Basically, a wetsuit keeps you warm by trapping a layer of water against your skin; your body warms the trapped water, which then acts as an insulator. Usually, a drysuit doesn't keep you warm at all; it keeps you *dry*, allowing the...

Diver drowns, kelp seen as culprit...

Even if it were legal to take abalone with your spare air strapped on, where would you put it? We've seen that dive knives, wrist lanyards, and depth gauges all pose significant entanglement hazards in thick kelp, and they have *far* smaller profiles than a spare air canister. And then there's...
