What are those Sharks really thinking Anyway?

I'm no shark expert, but for the most part all sharks worry about are eating and reproducing. So when that shark swims near you they are investigating to see whether your edible and whether or not your umm well....appropriate for shark reproduction.

    Poor viz diving

The best viz I've encountered in my short career as a diver was around 15-20 feet, mostly viz is somewhere is between 5 and 10 feet. Getting used to conditons like this, for me at least, began when I was much younger and snorkled/free dove the jetties (technically they are groins) in NJ. I...

PADI or SSI... what should we do?

Pffft....instruction is so overrated...diving is so easy you could practically teach yourself....just borrow someone's gear and figure it out yourself :jester:

Marking distance on a wreck reel

Well I've got a light for one thing, which usually is all it takes. I'm not into penetration yet (and not particularly sure whether I ever want to get into it) so silt outs aren't as much a problem as they would be in the rusted interior of a wreck. Of course there is always the possibility of...

Marking distance on a wreck reel

I like that, would work both on deployment and recovery, always telling me how far I am from wherever I started....only thing I'd change would be the color scheme....I'd match them up to casino chip denominations hehe. One question though, how far apart do you space your markings?

Marking distance on a wreck reel

I like to know distance travelled underwater, this way I can better navigate a wreck...knowing that landmark a is distance x from point y on the structure. Also, I'm mapping a location (not for dm or anything) for artififact recovery efforts and also for general navigational purposes on my more...

Wetsuit...my favorite bathing suit Drysuit, underarmor pants and shirt, thermal underwear, fleece pants, on top a few more insulating shirts topped by a fleece. Kept me toasty on last dive when water was 45.

    Drysuit Ascents

I've got 5 dives with the drysuit, 1 shallow water one (that was the real challenge) and 4 deeper 65-75 foots. I did the pool stuff and picked all the little excentricities of managing buoyancy with the suit fairly quickly. Hoveration/trim were pretty good, although I need a few more ozs on my...

    Towing Mechanism for Flag

Anyone ever toy around with the idea of a retractable towline for their dive float? I was thinking you have a retracting mechanism that only operates while you are depressing the handling device, this way if you drop it, the line will go slack and sink to the bottom (handle mechanism would be...

    Diver Vs. Octopus

Looks real to me. Interesting story regarding our eight legged underwater friends... A group of marine researchers were noticing that crabs kept in isolated tanks were being eaten. This problem persisted to the point where they set up video cameras to watch the tank room. Upon arrival the...
