Advice: hitting the ground running, or biting off more than I can chew?

Thank you. I had one once but did not know that was what it was called.

Okay, I give. What is a "beaver tail" - in terms of scuba diving protection?

    Why We Dive

Because I hate money and diving is the quickest way I've found to rid myself of money! :happywave:

    Car key solution for me

Spare key on necklace under wet suit or rash guard. By "necklace" I mean either a piece of light chain (think lightswitch pull chain) or paracord, depending.

    Computer Help..

While it's not directly what you asked about, a prescription bifocal mask would solve the problem and allow you to see more than your computer (SPG, for example, compass, etc.). And it's cheaper than a computer.

Need some advice (wetsuit and snorkeling) questions

Consider a farmer john paired with a jacket. That way you have three outfits. With a 3mil farmer john and a 3mil jacket, your core has 6mil on it - instead of only 4 as the suit you are considering. When the water warms up wear whichever one piece works best for you.

    Hi from Washington State

Hey Sarah, welcome to the board. My folks let me get certified a little bit older than your son (think I was 14). Turned 66 this year. Good for you for helping him and coming here for advice. Speaking of advice, I have none - about things you need to know, like cold weather gear for small...

Hello from Tennessee! (looking for advice on fins)

I'm in Nashville, bought full-foot fins first, wish I hadn't. Buy your neoprene boots, then some strap fins that fit. I prefer some sort of spring, bungee, or method of releasing fin straps to simplify taking them off and putting them on.

    Diving Safely Without A BC

SeaRat, thanks for posting that history lesson. Fun to read and brought back memories. I learned from some crusty old UDT guy at our local "Y". Had to do most of it.

Wes Skiles' Widow Looking For 25 Million from Lamartek

Sounds like my friend's old saying, "If anything happens to you . . . we're splitting up your gear!" I like your version too.

    Diving Safely Without A BC

Steel 72's. I never had one of those fancy "blow molded backpacks". Mine was a rectangular piece of metal, coated in plastic, hard rubber, some substance. But just a flat plate with a harness.

    Diving Safely Without A BC

I learned to dive before the invention of the BCD. From a somewhat foggy memory, we planned to be a tad heavy at the beginning of the dive (helped on descent), then positive at the end of the dive (helped on ascent and staying on top). I remember the joy of being weightless, so there must not...

    Refresher After 20 Years...

I would encourage Mum to go for it. I certified in the mid 1960's, dove through the mid '70's, then took a 40 year break. When I decided to go back, I went through the entire OW course. While the laws of physics have not changed, our knowledge of gas and it's effect on the body has. For me...

    Padi E-learning Problems

Assistance needed from PADI. My issue is an inability to sign up and pay for E-Learning. I completed E-Learning for my OW in the fall of 2015. So I have a username and password. I can successfully log in to E-Learning to access my OW course (until Oct. 2016). I can log in to PADI.COM as well...

Hard Case For Free Diving Fins?

Was thinking of those plastic storage cases in Target, WalMart, Sears, etc. I think the ones that appear around Christmas that are designed to store wrapping paper would be about the right size.
