son wants to scuba for his 8th birthday

Yes mate. I've seen a few instances of kids helping elderly grandparents, but there's also plenty of stories of parents who've collapsed and the kids call an ambulance and get them into the recovery position etc. Some of them will have done first aid, others are being instructed by the...

son wants to scuba for his 8th birthday

I qualified on or about my 14th birthday. I don't recall it being a huge thing, it was exciting but there was also a lot to learn and a lot to practice. My school teacher was the dive instructor, our leash was exceptionally short. I'll be looking long and hard at any program that I signed my...

D5 or Teric - convince me

My D9 is quite old now, but on its features I wouldn't buy another Suunto. The cost is serious, but the functionality is nothing special and the interface isn't simple. It does stupid things like lock you out if you miss a stop, so it's a terrible backup as you need to treat it like a primary...

Quiz - Physics - Minimum Displacement

I always found it depended on the trip. There'd be a keen diver in the AOW course, or Rescue, that were trying to decide if they wanted to sign up as a DM candidate. If you could talk them through some of the theory they were going to learn, demonstrate that the DM is not just a slave lugging...

Did i mention how much I despise the airlines?

I had a trip scheduled for early May, it's currently rescheduled to early October but we're very aware that it might delay again. There's potential that visa restrictions will be placed on travellers from countries with ongoing infection rates. Perhaps they'll let you in but require a medical...

Quiz - Physics - Minimum Displacement

There are probably 50 additional things to consider, if we want to get technical. It's standard procedure for cranes to calculate the weight of their rigging into the load, same applies here. We can calculate the theoretical buoyancy, then we'll learn the actual buoyancy of this 300L of concrete.

Bubble model vs. Gradient Factors redux

In the interests of full disclosure, I dropped out before DOE, the interest in statistics just wasn't there. The concern I would have is that you are comparing ascent profiles, but not the factors within the algorithm. Correlation, causation, etc, I don't think you need to push into 'bend and...

Bubble model vs. Gradient Factors redux

You'd need to be really careful with this, otherwise your findings have no reflection on the models. To understand the variance within a model, you can only change one parameter at a time. But, to understand the variance between models, you must dive the same profile with the same divers. If...

    Quiz - Physics - Fill a Container at 40 metres/132 feet

The compressible nature of the container itself is not relevant, providing that the ambient pressure can act on its contents. An obvious scenario is an chamber or bell on the bottom, ie a decompression habitat. You'd largely flood it to sink it, only enough air to manage its negative buoyancy as...

    Attaching Accessories

Previously I carried my little backup light on a retractable wire lanyard. It was handy but it was also a really poor attachment to the light and eventually the retraction spring failed. These days I use a bolt snap on the light, then a neoprene wrist mount that I slide the light into for use...

Bubble model vs. Gradient Factors redux

Extremely interesting. It sent me down the rabbit hole of a number of vBulletin threads, some of which were fascinating in a 'Kardashian' way rather than in a good way. Hopefully DAN publish soon, I'd love to get a look at the dive profiles and other details.

    Shearwater Desktop

It works fine on Windows 10 for me. The only issue I have had is the bluetooth sync. If I use bluetooth on my desktop it doesn't work, but if I plug in the bluetooth dongle that comes with my Shearwaters, it works every time.

    Hello from Australia

Welcome Santiago, good to have you. Snorkels are required for dive operations in Queensland. It does not have to be fitted to your mask, provided you have one in your pocket. Some do not ask, but they are required to ensure you have one, as per the code of practice for recreational diving...

    Pearse

Depends, but at a 14L/min SAC rate, maybe 8mins if you stay calm. Not enough time to scooter back to the tanks they've staged at the bottom of the first big drop at 107m. I expect those are for other divers that aren't carrying a bailout breather. I listened to a Speaking Sidemount podcast with...

    Pearse

These guys are diving what they call, the twin Meg. It's basically two rebreathers running in parallel. Gives them redundancy plus extra scrubber capacity at depth when the air is very dense and scrubbers are less efficient. They also do not fin at depth to keep the CO2 production low. You hear...

Quiz - Recreational Dive Planner™ - Pressure Group After Third Dive

If tables are your method you need to ensure sufficient headspace is available to do it well. Same as ratio deco, clearly works if you allocate enough brainpower to manage it. I know how prone to distraction I am. I also know how much of my professional life has been finding errors, I'm not...

Quiz - Recreational Dive Planner™ - Pressure Group After Third Dive

Agreed. I do these things best on paper, otherwise I'm prone to making errors when I transfer. Transcribing errors are very common in my experience.

    Pearse

Their website has a few write-ups on their Pearse expeditions, if anyone is interested. The habitats are a big piece of their cold water plan. They let the divers get out of the water and supply external power to their undergarments, comms, food etc. One write-up had the deco planning, how long...

    Quiz - Physics - Sound

Does predominance actually matter to diving? Its a multivariate formula, the question offers one variate only. The question doesn't imply a uni variate relationship, its just a simplified question for a dilatant understanding of physics, like Obama's economics. Its not re-visited in subsequent...

    Very wet drysuit dive

I've considered sneaking into the neighbour's pool. Yeah, I was running around with the surface spray last night. The mongrels are far too prevalent, next time we go away I'll set a few bombs off. Never seen them in the street though, sounds like a southern thing.
