The Zeagle Ranger Jr. is a GREAT b/c. My daughter is 8 and uses one. It's a tad expensive but it is designed to grow with her. She should be able to use it until shes 16 or more.

As it is I basically dive staying in the green rather than moving into yellow. This allows me what I feel is a margin of conservativeness as you put it. I just noticed that I was still in green while many others were in yellow.
