advice for a n00b - GoPro vs Sony Action camera?

Hope this isn't too basic a question. For a first time underwater video person, which would you recommend? A GoPro Hero or a Sony Action camera? I don't want National Geographic or award winning shots, I just want to share what it's like diving, with friends a family. The video equivalent of...

    Painted Lady butterflies

These were swarming through the north inland part of San Diego all day today. South to North, looked like several large bee swarms, then a pause, then more. Glorious!

    San Diego in January?

There are also several meetups (meetup.com) that gather at the Shores. I've often gone out with visiting divers, as have several others. Not as guides, or DMs, just buddies. Here's one: Saturday Morning Dive at the Shores!

Visiting San Diego, Giant Sea Bass?

I have seen GSB at the "NOSC tower" site off Pt Loma. I saw three on the same dive last Fall. I have no idea if this is at all common. I've only dove there twice, saw GSB both times, but that's a real small sample size and the dives were within a few weeks of each other.

    Big Island - Kona

Definitely do the Pelagic Magic if you can. Just drop down to about 40 or so, get neutral and "zen out" - you'll get nice long dive, all the small plankton-y critters will come up to the group. Don't expect to see anything large, or anything you can't see through. Pretty much the only solid...

Seiko SKX007: Watch runs too fast...

Warning: minor watch geekery ahead... you've been warned... TL;DR - your watch is a classic, and it's in spec, it's a perfectly serviceable model, a good watch shop can probably regulate it to 2-5 min a month at best. There's a video at the end that shows the regulation process. The SKX007...

Who travels with a spare mask and why?

My current prescription dive mask goes in my carry-on. My older prescription mask goes in my wife's carry-on. It's a 6 year old prescription that's "gauge readers" only as opposed to my new prescription with has a better focal length and is complete bi-focals. Without them, I'm not diving :-(

Closed: Barely Used XS Scuba PVD PRO Valves. SOLD

I'm not in the market for valves, but I am curious, why replace these with Thermo valves? Both are same working pressure and both do DIN and Yoke with inserts, don't they? (Knows nothing about the inner workings of different manufacturers valves...)

    San Diego in January?

With the weather we've been having, do keep an eye on wave action, esp direction. Waves that are diveable at a place like La Jolla Shores (straight beach, sandy bottom) can turn the Cove into a Washing Machine of Doom. It's a "dogleg left" leaving the N facing beach, with lots of rocks on the W...

    Can’t get on site?

I was sure I reported this at least 6 weeks ago.. Here's the skinny... Google Online Security Blog: Chrome’s Plan to Distrust Symantec Certificates I use Chrome Canary, so I'm a few weeks/months ahead of people using mainstream Chrome. But soon, all browsers will be throwing this error.

    post Olivia conditions?

And I saw they even lifted the tropical storm warning for the big island and Kauai before it even got there... Glad it was less "exciting" than the last one! I've heard that 'way north Kauai is still digging out and rebuilding.

PADI AOW vs SSI deep diver qualifications

I did the SSI specialties after OW as Stress and Rescue, Navigation, Nitrox I and II (it was two separate courses way back when), and then Deep. I had about 50 dives (and an NASDS AOW) before I started all this, I was re-certing from scratch with my son. I probably wouldn't do Deep without at...

    post Olivia conditions?

We'll be arriving in Kona Saturday after Olivia passes through. I'm *guessing* that the runoff from the storm will cause some silting and viz problems for a while? How long is a while? A few days, a week? Of course, for someone coming from "OMG 20 ft viz!! WOOOHOOO!" land, I'm still expecting...

Show me your Nice Knife! Vintage BFKs welcome

That's not a knife... :-) I found the knife buried in the sand on the beach at La Jolla shores in 1982 while on vacation. I decided to visit the closest dive shop to see if anyone had lost it. They said it was purchased the week before by someone taking their OW. The story from them was the...
