    AOW Deep Dive

Those steps can be intimidating, for new divers, or even more experienced divers who learned in clear warm water. I know it was for me for a while, and that's where I learned to dive. I finally decided to take the deep course, and we did the 130' dives right around that spot. And I still do...

Certified early 1970, records lost, Help

If the agency was NASDS, they merged into SSI. Also, almost all records were lost in a fire at NASDS in 1977. My luck, I originally cert'ed with NASDS in 1976. See http://www.interocean.com/pdf/SSI_RplcCrdFm.pdf Replacement Cards – 1977 NASDS Fire. We may not be able to locate records in our...

    Mystery Item

Seems to be a fair amount of fish farming in the Caribbean. And some specifically in Cozumel. https://sgp.undp.org/index.php?option=com_docman&view=download&Itemid=313&alias=375-fish-production-cooperative-societies-of-cozumel-and-vigia-chico&category_slug=award-winning-projects

    Tanks In Cars....

Even a big swing in temp, say from 80F to 140F would only net about a 10% pressure increase. That's really worst case as it ignores the thermal mass of a steel or aluminum tank. In other words you'd have to have a tank in a trunk for a loooong time for the air inside to reach 140F in a 140F...

Leaky masks and Mustache sealants & wax

Have him make sure he wears the mask a little higher than might be needed without the 'stache. I have an Oceanic Shadow and just by making extra sure it is tight up against the bottom of my nose makes all the difference.

For people who still dive AT-PACs, do you use the integrated lead pellet weights?

MacDive review (v 2.6.5, Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, Aeris Atmos 2)

I am still a very happy MacDive user. I now only have ONE thing left that I need the Windows VM for, for everything else I found a Mac replacement. In the case of MacDive, it is light years ahead of the Windows program I had been using. (If I could just find Mac software for my ham radio...

Does computer PLAN mode consider CNS limit?

Check your computer's manual. I would hope that all Nitrox-capable computers would work this way, but check the manual for YOUR computer. I know that the Aeris Atmos2, which is a many years old model, considers oxygen toxicity (CNS) in its dive plan mode. See page 46 for an example.

Article: Is the Dive Watch Dead?

I've liked dive watches since I was a little kid and my dad and uncles came back from overseas deployments wearing SEIKO dive watches in the 60-70s. Probably the 6125 which was widely sold on bases. Tough, accurate, and affordable then. There's an ISO standard for dive watches, which I only...

Mac dive log software with Android app

This isn't a good answer, but I am a Mac laptop/desktop and Android phone user... I'm happy enough using my computer alone for a few days, then uploading dives to macdive at the end. Honestly though, 99% of my diving these days is local, 1 or 2 dives then home. So laptop at home without being...

How to not overheat on surface swims

Here's a relatively typical dive at LJS. Descend to the sandy bottom at 30/40' . Follow that slope down to the 50/60' line which is the top of a set of steps, along the ledge and back, then a slow ascent into 5/10'. Pretty relaxing, except I really do hate the 200+ yard surface swim out.

How to not overheat on surface swims

I'm with ya. That long surface swim out from LJS is... not fun. I swear that they keep moving the 40'/60' wall farther and farther out every year. I've always told my buddies that I'm a) not the fastest swimmer and b) I'm going to take a few minutes once we get to the line up before I descend...

Safety Stand Down - Power SCUBA - San Diego CA

I was a DoD contractor 'way back in the day' - I saw safety stand downs at both Navy and Marine Corp bases at different times over the years. It seemed to make an impression.

Safety Stand Down - Power SCUBA - San Diego CA

The following message was posted to the Power SCUBA meetup mailing list this morning. I'm passing it along with the permission of the author and operator of the meetup. Personally, I like this kind of message; it reminds us that complacency is dangerous in our sport, and gives some focus for...

Someone *will* there, usually 4-12 someones. Unless...
