Trip report - Walindi Plantation New Britain, PNG

You'll be fine, there are fans in the bungalows that do a good job keeping you cool.

    Anyone ever dove St. Croix?

When I was a tadpole back in the early 1980s I lived on the west end of St. Croix. We'd go up to Cane Bay in our Bronco (very rough roads) and it was basically deserted. (As I recall there were some ruins of an old hotel that had washed away in the 1920s or 1930s.) Anyhoo, we'd snorkel out...

Who has NEVER had something stolen in Bonaire?

Three times, fourth time coming up. Had a bottle of suntan lotion nicked (big deal) but more worryingly woke up our last morning to find someone had pulled back the undercover of the wheel well and drained 2/3rds of a tank of gas.

    Orion BC from ScubaL (Triple-L)

I think you're talking about the two bungee cord loops connected together with a two-sided velcro tab. If so, my wife and I use that for our SPG. We took the small velcro loop and connected it to the gauge. Works really well and keeps it nicely at hand and not dangling. Not sure about...

    Orion BC from ScubaL (Triple-L)

That loop is for your inflator hose. I never use it on my Orion. We've used the heck out of the two I got for my wife and I. They've been decent, and certainly good value for the price...but I've also had to repair splits in the bladder on both of the BCs. We use lead shot weights in the...

$234 non-stop to Roatan via Houston

Cajun, I think they got pulled yesterday. Friend tried to book it and couldn't...checked on the dates we bought and found that they were priced at $530/each now. Edit: For future reference, it was a Saturday to Saturday HOU-Roatan direct routing.

Starting from zero, want to dive Cozumel next week

FANTASTIC! Have a great trip and don't forget to stop and look around a couple of times during your certification dives!

Starting from zero, want to dive Cozumel next week

I'm going to be a contrarian here and answer your question with: "It depends." I took a OWD over five full days while in Western Australia, also on a bit of a "whim." As I recall, presentation of text material took the first two days, test and pool skills on the third day, and two days of...

    oil rigs off Texas coast

So in current you won't hold onto a mooring line during a safety stop or (as they do in FG) pull yourself down to the reef using one? Because there is plenty of slime and barnacles on those ropes! And you won't use your hand to stir up a bit of sand to expose an interesting artifact? Or pick...

    Why do you dive?

This, too. She likes wildlife spotting and I like taking pictures, so we work pretty well together as well! In fact, she's generally the one pestering me when we don't have a couple of dive vacations scheduled for the next year....

Exciting news - New way to reach the Bay Islands

Just to add another data point here, TACA currently has flights ex Houston to Roatan for $234 on their website.

    oil rigs off Texas coast

Honestly, I don't see the problem with finding a clear handhold on a rig dive during current and holding on to watch the show. It's not like they are permanent structures.

    Why do you dive?

My big draws are photography and wildlife observation, beyond just the feeling of freedom while moving in the water. Edit: On, and to start, it was just one of those things I always thought I would do, ever since growing up with Cousteau specials and being a young boy snorkeling in St. Croix.

$234 non-stop to Roatan via Houston

As I understand it, TACA is a regional consortium of Central American flag carriers. I've flown them once before (LA-Belize via San Salvador) and they weren't too bad. They've got a bit of a spotty history, but given that this is a direct flight I figure they can't mess it up THAT badly...

    New Scientific Diver

How are the springs themselves looking? When my wife and I did the course last year, there was not much flow at all...I'm guessing that with all the recent rain, the situation is now much better.

Sarting a Dive Op... a candid discussion.

Some thoughts (not exhaustive, so I retain the ability to revise and extend my remarks) about how I've chosen dive operators in the past: 1) Word of mouth, word of mouth, word of mouth. This obviously takes time to develop, but there is nothing like coming onto Scubaboard and seeing a...
