Canadian diver and buddy rescued near Apo Island, Philippines

Hmm, it doesn't sound like he holds hard feelings at all: "The operators of their dive boat are being questioned by local authorities in connection with the ordeal but LaFrance is adamant that the crew did all they could to try and find them. “I know for sure they looked for us. I know for...

Death in Cocos from shark attack

Similar situation very recently in Holguin, Cuba, although tragically a young man was bitten on the leg and died. This incident apparently occurred after dark and suspected to be a tiger shark. Very rare to see sharks here from what I understand, the dive centre guys I talk to there say they...

    Mildly regretting a dive?

This guy would probably like to take one back- The diver who swelled up to double his size

    Buffalo police Diver missing

With slower currents so they are hoping for better conditions for a recovery. My neighbour says the vis can be very good. He's a bit of an adrenaline junkie and I have declined his invitations to dive there.

    New divers and buying equipment

That would make for an interesting thread . Personally I know of four people who geared up and dropped the sport within a a few years. I haven't done a statistical analysis if that is what you are looking for :) There's also a lot of gear available with divers upgrading, point being you can get...

    New divers and buying equipment

There's a lot of good second hand gear out with so many people dropping the sport. That's the initial route I took, I purchased relatively cheap but high quality gear from a trusted DM and then had it serviced. For my first 100 or so dives I never owned a dive computer. I also overestimated what...

    Buffalo police Diver missing

Search continues on third day I've been watching this on the local Buffalo news. It seems he was new to the unit too, his buddies must be devastated- they were visibly distraught and frustrated. It must be incredibly difficult to do a search there, hopefully they find him in the calmer sections...

Night diving - what is it like?

If it's a guided dive an octopus will be one critter they will be looking to show you- they may feed it. There can be a lot of jellies and small crustaceans darting around, akin to driving through a snow blizzard. Maybe a shorty wouldn't be a good idea if you think that would give you the...

Night diving - what is it like?

Definitely worth doing, at least in the tropics anyway- especially if you're interested in wildlife as there are some corals and crustaceans that are more active during the day. The one thing that sticks to mind after my first night dive was the amount of small stuff darting around in the water...

    Arrogance and humility among divers

It was a joke.. as in if a diver is excessively arrogant others will not likely want to dive with them. Perhaps I should have included a happy smiley face. You bet wrong- I do know and have met very nice solo divers :)

Tourist dead, 7 arrested - India

Maybe it was a dive skin, or forgot to take his belt off..? I never thought it was essential to be a good swimmer to dive, but you should be able tread water comfortably with some means of mobility. Very sad.

Do you actually see people diving with pony bottles?

Just sounds like your average resort dive in Cuba.

    Arrogance and humility among divers

I suppose one can be arrogant and be an exceptional diver- however I imagine many are now solo divers.

Certifying experience/ability of a diver when booking a dive

I had a fairly rigorous initial cert with NAUI, it was club based and one of the instructors was ex-military. There was an emphasis on fitness and tasking under pressure- and yes competition. Only 5 of what was surely over a dozen students passed, most these days would call that a colossal...

Certifying experience/ability of a diver when booking a dive

Do c-cards hold equal weight now as they did 30 years ago though? Some do and some don't it seems. Does the average rec diver out there have the same skill level as back then? I wasn't into diving 30 years ago so I can't comment from experience on that one.

    Trust Me Dives

I have generally thought it to mean any dive where someone is on a site that involves an environment they unfamiliar with and their buddy or dive leader is.

Certifying experience/ability of a diver when booking a dive

To streamline the process for both busy ops and ease of use for divers I think is what he indicated. I wasn't aware this was needed myself- perhaps it isn't. The follow up questions seemed to indicate some sort of cursory pre-screening in order to categorize diver's abilities before they...

    Identifying a skilled rescue diver?

Reviewing the book/notes and updating the emergency care component help- which I have done, but without actually practicing scenarios your effectiveness as a rescue diver is significantly diminished if a lot of time passes. I don't think there is an effective way to determine a truly good...

Certifying experience/ability of a diver when booking a dive

I'm not for more rigorous vetting by operators, I'd much prefer more rigorous training in the industry at the front end. However many if not most divers rely on operators/boat owners to get to their desired dive locations and safety concerns and some degree of vetting seems to be their core...
