Headed to the Thousand Islands Friday...

I'll be at the Islander Sat morning around 9, with a new diver going on his first post cert dives. My regular buddy will be going up with another newish diver.

    Mask and Flooding

It sounds like you have a feel for the problem. Not too tight is good -- you don't want it to press that tightly. One thing might be if sometimes you clench your teeth on the mouthpiece -- doing that would raise ridges from your nose to your mouth, provide a leak point. Also, I tend to...

Headed to the Thousand Islands Friday...

The Islander is a wreck, shore dive, immediately behind River Hospital in A Bay. There's a little park set up for divers behind the hospital, with a gazebo and nice entry ramp, plus parking. Go straight out, about 50', you'll see the dive flag tie-off on the wreck at about 27' depth. For a...

    Have training standards "slipped"?

I actually like having the tables, do carry them as backup, since I already wear a BT/depth watch.

Dear Dork Divers Advice Column – Ask us your questions

For night dives, I've heard that at least two, if not three, strobes (not those wimpy tank lights) are recommended, two attached to fins and the third on the tank. That will let the other divers keep their eyes acclimated for when they surface. (If passing another pair at night, be sure to...

    Hovering and weight issues

I tend to either cross my legs, hold the fin tips, else curl up into a "cannonball", arms tucked under my bent knees. If you're practicing this shallow you may get into the problem with differential pressure, the air expanding more if your head/shoulders are above the point where you were...

    Questions about DM training

Dive experience, and training, where you plan on working as a DM is probably "best". If you plan on staying in high, cold, fresh, Colorado, training in low, warm, salt Roatan or CR might not make sense. Good luck whatever you choose -- dive safe!

    First solo dives

I think relaxed and alert actually go together. I find it peaceful, yet I am more aware of my surroundings, time that I'm not spending checking on my buddy. A good dive with a good buddy is super, but sometimes just getting away from it all is nice :)

    Have training standards "slipped"?

Buddy breathing and unconscious diver? In a basic OW class? What org did you train with? (No, it's not the norm overall, today. Out of air drill, using your buddy's safe second is the norm, with buddy breathing [sharing a single regulator between two people] at most an "option", pretty...

    Have training standards "slipped"?

On the walk to school -- don't forget it was uphill both ways :)

    How hot can tanks get?

5 psi per degree F is your delta (approximation, but useful rule of thumb). Charlie99 gives the more accurate calculation, but I'm a lazy person :) The problem, however, is you can have other failures beyond pressure. I saw a tank in the shop last week. It hadn't had a pressure failure, but...

Any tips for cold water solo diving

You might want to budget a bit of time, assuming that you'll be switching to a drysuit, to really get comfortable with DS diving. No magic, of course, but practicing the various ways to get out of a feet first ascent is probably good to do. Personally, I do notice a bit more task loading...

    Buoyancy of wetsuits

I wear size L. My Henderson 5 mm core warmer is 4 lb, while my 5 mm full wetsuit is 8 lb buoyant. My 3mm full suit, an Evo, seems about 4 lb also. I They of course compress at depth, and degrade some over time, but the idea is to target for neutral at the end of the dive, at the safety stop...

    HP steel 120 or 130?

I'm like Rainer, stick with the 100 but also carry a 19CF pony. The 100 gets me as close to NDL as I want to be, including a clean half depth and safety stop, and the pony is my backup if something hits the fan.

Good job Sherwood -- Maximus cover change

I've got a 2 YO Maximus. Had a purge cover problem, normal wear. The replacement failed quickly. It turns out it was old stock in the supply system -- Sherwood has a redesigned Maximus purge cover that should correct the problem. The old cover has two metallic-colored pieces in the center, a...
