Was at the Poor Knights with Dive Tutukaka on the 27th. Since it had been five months since my last dive I decided to go with the guide for the first dive.
The guide was a 19 year old young lady. They sure start them young these days. Was a bit surprised when she took us quite a ways into a...
Same here. Seahunt got me interested. Back then you didn't need to be certified to rent gear. We self-tought and no-one I knew ever got hurt.
Had our own sailboat and dove all over. Never got certified until my wife got tired of following me around in the dingy and decided to learn how to...
I agree that the Mares Puck Pro+ is a great little dive computer. Have been using one for years. You can change the battery yourself when necessary. Has a backlight and lots of features such as Nitrox. Will sound an alarm if you do dumb stuff (go too deep on your Nitrox, surface too fast, etc.).
I'm 77 years old. Have been diving for 56 years. Been diving solo most of my life because diving with someone who has much less experience scares me. Twice, when diving with a buddy, they panicked and those were unpleasant experiences.
Diving solo allows me to go at my own pace and enjoy the...
The Poor Knights islands in New Zealand offers some of the most spectacular diving in the world.
Flights are available between Hawaii and New Zealand. English is the official language and you get $NZ1.60 for each US$.
Check out www.diving.co.nz
They have clean on-site accomodations.
I second the idea of New Zealand. The Poor Knights islands are rated one of the top ten best dive spots in the world. They speak English and your dollar is worth about NZ$1.60. 12 hour flight from Los Angeles. The only negative is we drive on the left side of the road.
Dive Tutukaka is a...
Check the outside of the East side of the reef. My wife and I left our 26 foot sailboat "Marjan" on the reef on 18 October 1975. Sailed that boat from San Diego through the Panama canal to Swan Island. Left Swan island towards Cozumel when the weather packed up and we couldn't get a celestial...
Yup, seen one like that in New Zealand. My dive buddy and I were diving in a cave and saw this monster lobster. We went back out and asked each other if we had seen any empty wetsuits in there.
If you fly from Auckland to Whangarei (the closest airport to Tutukaka) you can take a shuttle bus to Tutukaka. I know that the shuttle bus www.coastalcommuter.co.nz services the Whangarei airport and gets you to Tutukaka in time for the boats leaving to the Poor Knights.
Hello.
I have never dived in a lake and do not know if lake diving presents any hazards over ocean diving.
I can say that I have been solo diving in the ocean for 35 years and still alive. A shark had a go at me once on a night dive. Got tangled into a bit of fishing line once. Forgot to...
Poor Knights Island New Zealand. Two solo nitrox dives off Calypso with Dive Tutukaka. First dive to 21.1M for 50 minutes, second dive to 26.6M for 49 minutes. Water temperature was 17 degrees. Very clear water.
As a certified solo diver I am occasionally asked to be the "lost diver" in a rescue diver class. Talk about boring!
You can't move around or you'll never be "found" so you lie on the bottom waiting for ages to be rescued.
The most exciting thing to have happened on one of those outings...
I'm 76 and don't believe I have another dozen years. Until a few years ago I used to do two dives every two weeks. Now down to two dives every three months or so. Been diving mostly at the Poor Knights islands New Zealand. This is rated to be one of the top ten dive spots in the world...
If you are in New Zealand why not stay there and dive the Poor Knights Island? It's rated one of the ten best dive spots in the world.
See Question - Questions on Poor Knights for my previous post about diving the Poor Knights.
I can but back hurts a few hours later so now take the gear off in the water and Dive Tutukaka boat crew hauls it up for me. I dive with them frequently so they are happy to help me.
