Wreck diving - how to proceed

I started diving wrecks before there were wreck specialized classes, certifications and for that matter agency related classes. That being said here a couple of observations I can share from my experience. Wreck diving requires pre-dive planning, dive plan, equipment to be used and adequate gas...

day diving & handicapped without a dive light

The principle value of a light is to signal another diver. It's primarily a safety tool. Its helpful to know what a circular motion is, when and how to use it and what to look for in response to it from another diver. Equally important what a rapid horizontal light signal implies. I've found it...

Does everyone really need an SPG? (w/transmitter)

I've always had/carry an SPG. I've been diving computers of some sort for over 25 years. The main reason I have an SPG( located on my left side, on a 22" HP hose, with a clip and attached to my BC D ring. The clip is attached to the SPG hose with a large O ring doubled over slid through the clip...

    Can underwater ammo explode?

When diving in Truk lagoon( now known as Chuuk) I dove in the San Francisco Maru( 70 meters to the sand)/ In the forward hold, there where spherical mines. I was told later that many of these mines had been harvested by locals to salvage the powered. I also dove in the aft hold where there...

Does anyone ask to see your logbook?

I've kept a dive log book for 30+ years( actually on my fifth volume). I can't recall anyone ever asking to see it but I continue using it. My input on my last dive helps me get focused on the next. It helps me personally keep Track of my SAC, gases mixes, weather and sea conditions and other...

    I f*** up and I am ashamed

The person who suggest diving with 5 kg might have had a point. There is room to experiment between 2kg and 5 kg. It sounds to me like a buoyance control issue. It is easier to manage a little extra weight by adding air to the BC. If you keep a log book and document what happened and read...

Can I dive without an octo?

Of course you can dive without an octo. If you encounter an out of air diver, he/she will rip your primary right out of your mouth and you will get to experience diving without air. It's your call: no octo for them equals no air for you.

Dive computers - buckle or bungee strap?

I've been partial to bungee cord. One less thing to break or malfunction, i.e., strap buckle(s). Plus, I can rotate the computer( Perdix AI) around my arm to read at angles or protect it climbing ladders etc.

    What if...? Miscellaneous Problems

What would you do if your buddy started making fun of how much air you use? Knowing your SAC and your buddies SAC is a basic perquisite to/for survival underwater. If you know yours, its easy to ask another what theirs is and compare. If they dont know, get a different buddy. If they do...

    Air share

I've had three occasions to share air with other divers. The first time: was off Anacapa island in the channel islands off of California. At a depth of 20 meter(60 feet) a diver emerged ( viz about 15 feet) spun, faced me and made the OOA sign. I offered her my primary, grabbed her BC strap and...

    the sweet spot

15 minutes or more of deco is a deal compared to a 12 hour chamber ride. Especially on the last dive of the day. That profile( regardless of depth) should be a 60% control ascent, incrementally staged. That is called deco.

At what point would it be recommended to carry a back up mask?

The time to need a back up mask is when you find you need one. That moment can be either underwater or on the surface. Underwater mask issues are usually a broken mask strap. Pressure gradient changes during diving create expansion and contraction of both hoods and straps. Vinyl and plastics...

how to attach safety sausage to BCD

I have found that a reel can serves multiple purposes that a spool can not. I use a 150' reel for penetration, low viz navigation and ascent. I clipped mine to a D ring on my left side below my canister light. When I'm horizontal, it hangs forward slightly making it easier to find and detach for...

    Decisions on a Dive Computer

When I started diving the only computer available was my brain. We had a pressure gauge, a watch and navy tables. I'm really dating myself but we also had the infamous J valves. Progressing through the years I have had a variety of dive computers, buying some of the greatest and latest of the...
