    Modifying BCD - Bad idea?

Can you do it some other way where the D ring is on a strap or web that is anchored to something more solid?

    Lake Travis Cleanup

It's a big trash cleanup at Lake Travis. LCRA and the local shops are running it. We're going to Devil's Cove and Stearn's Island to dive for trash.

    Signalling with Mirror

You can't really see the reflected spot more than a few hundrew yards away. The mirror with the aiming mesh creates a "ghost image" of the refected spot that you can see through the hole and place on the target. Also, with the aiming spot, you can hit a target close to one horizon when the...

    Signalling with Mirror

No, it really works. You can aim and hit a traffic sign at a mile or so and see it light up.

essential extra scuba items... (don't leave home without em)

There are some camping mirrors with the cloth sighting mesh layered between two pieces of glass. They are often held together with double stick tape. The water gets between the glass and gets the cloth wet. When this happens, you will no longer see the visible "hot spot" used for aiming. For...

essential extra scuba items... (don't leave home without em)

A CD is not going to really work when you need it. You can't really aim it at anything more than a few hundred yards away. Most of the $2 camping mirrors will flood. A good signal mirror will have a retroreflective bead fabric in the sight hole that allows you to aim it at a target far away...

Zeagle Ranger w/o a RipCord system?

Aww man, I thought I had to send it back to the mfg to get it rethreaded :) I've actually heard this BS before! My first experience with Zeagle rethreading was when a Escape I was using for OW cert got caught on something in the car and pulled out. My instructor told me to "figure it out"...

    Zip Tie Question

I've seen some zip ties that advertise stainless locking teeth instead of the plastic. Has anyone tried these in salt water. I'd assume that the "stainless" wouldn't be that resistant to regular immersion, so I've just bought all plastic. And my Home Depot has pretty nice stainless boltsnaps...

    Thread pulling

No way, my ancestors came over on the Mayflower also! She can find out about that stuff after she gets married which will be when she's 30. I'm sorry I called you guys puritans. I only meant it in the "we're too embarassed to have nude statues in our town square sort of historical sense", not...

    Cyalume replacements

Koi, Have you taken the Krill underwater? They don't seem to give a depth rating, they just say "waterproof." in the FAQ.

Hey, I was just readin' not writin'. As a north america, I can't acknowledge the existence of such activities other than for the sole purpose of creating grandchildren. I can only observe with horror and disdain our European brethren that can discuss such illicit topics with no shame. I...

Mythos - big time fogging problem!

It's glass. I have the same mask. I remember having to scrub it about 3 or 4 times when it was new. I guess it had a lot of residue. After that, I just put on the defog after the post dive wash and it's good to go next time.

How do you attach your reel to your DSMB?

Thanks, no pictures required for the snoop loop. It's obvious and the line was already set up this way. I now see how you avoid a boltsnap on the end of the line.

    Thread pulling

I woke up really early one morning and all the UK divers have got a great thread on the tech forum about how to perform certain social interactions at 200ft. Good details on the right kind of beavertail wetsuit to use and other useful information. I go to get the wife so she can read it too. By...

What's the coolest thing you saw this month diving?

Well, if we counted last month, I could talk about a bunch of stuff in the Keys. But in the last month there is only one tale to tell. I met another board member at Mansfield Dam to get in a practice dive. There's a dive park with a few sunken boats and the obligatory Cessna fuselage. So...

    Carbon Fiber tanks

I took a composite material course when I was a jet mech in the Navy. The stuff is strong and light. It also needs frequent inspection by a qualified inspector. I love composite sports gear such as tennis rackets and golf clubs, but I just don't think it's a good idea for consumer products...

    OMS v. Apvalves-Buddy

I have the AP Valve SMBc. The material looks pretty solid and my overall opinion is that it is a good quality item. Looks like it should last "for a long time" provided a regular freshwater rinse is performed. I've never seen an OMS, so I can't make a comparison for you.

How do you attach your reel to your DSMB?

Yes, I just wanted to know which was the most prevalent setup. Sounds like a boltsnap on the line is pretty common. I also like Grazie's arrangement which would allow you to snap the SMB to something else if needed.

How do you attach your reel to your DSMB?

I don't have room to store them together, so I don't want to have to mess with tying and un-tying every time. It's looks like there are a variety of options: clip on the SMB clip on the end of the line Something I haven't thought of? I have a Buddy pocket reel which has a loop and large...
