    Buoyancy Compensation Preference

What's amazing is that so many of us are still alive. After all, BP/W and back inflate BCD should have forced 70% of us face first into the water at the surface to meet Davy Jones.

    Almost a bad situation!

I think it would have been best to treat this as a surface rescue. One of you could have gone in and the other called for additional help. It would be hard for the victim to drown you in a wetsuit and you could use a sausage or SMB for flotation. 65F is cold, but not that cold. People in...

where do you keep your Whistle

I have a separate bag will all my survival gear. Whistle, strobe, mirror, flashlight, mylar blanket and extra batteries. survival gear I have my DSMB on the other side. DSMB I don't hang any stuff off of my BC that I won't need underwater.

    Retractors/Gear-Keepers

I have a retractor for my console so that I can grab, look and let go. I don't think they're reliable enough to use for a "single point" attachment such as an expensive camera. If the retractor on my console breaks, the console's still attached to my reg by the hose. If the retractor...

BP/W use dependent on level of diving expertise????? Help.

Thank you Herman! Since you should be neutral with 500psi and an empty BC, the BC need only supply enought lift to make you positive from a neutral to -5 bouyancy (assuming an AL80.) So you should have had 13lbs of lift at the beginning of your dive and about 18lbs at the end of the dive...

    Vip +

I was suspicious of the cause of the cracked neck threads. I have personally observed the use a a hammer (not a mallet) and a large wrench to *tighten* a tank valve into a tank. I asked a long time scuba professional and former shop owner about this practice and she said it is standard...

    Open Water and Questions!

If there is no ladder, you should keep your fins and give a strong upward kick as you lift yourself onto the boat. It's more coordination than strength.

    DIR wars...Is it the name?

Rich is right on and this was the thrust of my tailhook parable. (I'm glad some of you found it funny :D) The FIR procedures are 100% appropriate for landing a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier (well, maybe not the separate fuel guage on the D ring) but totally inappropriate to land a...

    Vip +

I'm a bit curious. What is the documented correct procedure for tightening a valve into a tank? What is the required torque? How do most shops perform this procedure? Is there any difference between the way valves are installed on steel vs. AL tanks?

    DIR wars...Is it the name?

Fly It Right (FIR) Forum Q: When I am landing my airplane, how soon after the wheels touch the ground should I cut the throttle? FIR: You should not cut the throttle, you should go to full throttle immediately and let you tailhook catch the wire. Then you can fly away safely if you miss...

    1st Ocean Dive Advice

I would suggest finding a shallow, sheltered cove or inlet and checking your weight and bouyancy in saltwater before diving to 100ft. Put on all your gear and use the rule of thumb formulas found other places on this board to get your weight right before jumping in the deep end.

High pressure hose blowing, can it happen UW?

Well, as an example of something that can really cut your finger off, a water jet cutter spits out a tiny stream of water at around 35,000 psi. That's 10 times the pressure in a scuba tank and they use water with abrasive grit in it.

High pressure hose blowing, can it happen UW?

Not to go into a lot of math, but there is flow and pressure involved. If you have a single lane of traffic going 100mph, it can move as many cars as 4 lanes of traffic going 25mph. The flow of both is the same. It's the same with gases and fluids moving through pipes. 3000psi (HP) through a...

    Opinions on Atomic accessories

I've got the B2. I used to have to grab the swivel and straighten a few times a dive. I recently changed to a SeaCure mouthpiece and don't think the swivel has bothered me anymore. The Atomic mouthpiece is pretty good, but I still like the SeaCure better.
