    Tying on Bolt Snaps

Maybe ziptie quality is important, but I have a bulk pack of zipties from costco and have had two of the small ones break (from twisting) that I used to attach the bolt snap to my SPG. I have switched over to braided nylon line. I typically don't trust what people say, so I have tried a...

    wingin' it...

I think with a 31" inch waist (I am 5 9" with a 31" waist) you are probably way overweighted with 30 pounds. In a 7mm 2 pc, I carried about 18 pounds with my jacket style BC. I have not yet had the chance to dive the 7mm with BP and wings but here are the numbers that I have: 3 mm wetsuit...

My first regulator - normal, defect, or in need of minor adjustment?

I highly recommend getting it serviced. expect to pay 20-50, which isn't a big deal. You saved that much by not having to pay sales tax. I found out which dive shops I didn't like when they got nasty about servicing a reg I bought online.

    Considering BP/wings setup...

Gary on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1862180229) sells an al backplate and harness for 78 (includes crotch strap). Note that it doesn't have halcyon pioneer slots for use without an STA but I think that I read on the board that he would add them for free.

    Pelican 1650 case...

I use a 1650 case. My guess is that 2" is too close for them to measure accurately. In addition, there are always quite a few pieces that look larger, the 1650 is big but not really bigger than normal suitcases. The 1650 just barely holds 1 set of gear. Keep in mind that the case itself is...

    Baggage Charges

I travel with my pelican bag at 66 pounds. I just make sure my dive gear is under the 70lb limit. US air of course charges for dive gear regardless of weight. And they just filed ch 11 this month.

Calculating air consumption SAC / SCR / RMV

Your air consumption seems a little high. I started around 60 ft for about 40 minutes and have gotten to about 60ft for 45-55 minutes using about that much air. Since I always use AL80's I haven't bothered to calculate cubic ft/minute and just leave it as psi/minute. My friend who is a...

    Econo-BC's

I disagree that there are major comfort issues with a BP. In fact with the BP I find it easier to trek the long distance necessary for a shore dive because the weight is distributed more like a backpack than a jacket. I found that my jacket style BC's straps wouldn't stay tight under prolonged...

What to carry on plane beside reg's

I check all of my dive gear. I use a large pelican case with a padlock. I pretty much only carry on my computer (and any work I need to do) and for international flights I carry on toiletries. This last trip I lost 2 bags out of 5, but neither of them was the dive gear. One bag showed up the...

    Weightbelt on Vacation

I bring my own weight. My equipment, large pelican case and 10 pounds of weight weighs about 62 pounds. I do worry about a time in the future when I bring my gear back without having time to dry it out completely such that I am over the limit. But I guess the 24 hour no fly rule will probably...

    Econo-BC's

You shouldn't have any problems getting some nice used equipment for 500.

Upside down breathing with apeks reg

Upside down is horizontal looking towards the surface. The reg breathes very well in a horizontal or heads down position or heads up position. When going upside down it feels like the ease of breathing is cut to about 30% (cut by 60%). It is like the feeling you get just before you run out of...

I definitely would be! Do you have a boat?

    Trim weights

Sometimes it feels like people aren't reading my posts.. :) I am not using trim weights, tank shifting is enough to do it for me. I have reasonably good, although not perfect trim. When my tank is full I tend to roll onto my back when I am completely motionless, although horizontally front to...

Upside down breathing with apeks reg

I have an ATX 100 and have been trying to practice buoyancy control upside down. (There isn't much else to do in lake travis). The problem is that my ATX 100 doesn't breathe well at all while upside down. Have other people people found this to be the case?

    Flower Garden Recommendations

I am a novice diver (20-30 dives) I went while the conditions were about as good as they can be in July and I found the diving to be easy (1-3 ft waves, moderate current). Nothing is going to prepare you for getting on the boat in rough seas except getting on a boat in rough seas. The vis is...

Transpac or Diverite BP/Wing for newbie?

You should be able to find Halcyon 27# wings for 220, just keep calling dive shops until you find one that will. The backplate, depending on what you get, will cost about 100-200 fully harnessed. This should be comparable to the transpac. The transpac isn't bad, but doesn't quite feel as robust...

    Trim weights

I understand the center of gravity/see saw analogy. What I have been trying to stress is that for certain body types such as muscular legs, it may not be possible. As I have indicated in my posts pulling my legs in isn't enough of a shift. Most of the weight in my legs is in my hamstrings and...

The real problem with UK's Light Cannon...

My credit card company also has 90 day insurance protection on anything that I buy with it. You might want to check to see if you are covered in that way. The insurance protection is for lost, stolen or broken.

    I hate conforming...

Superhelix, make sure you don't just go and buy everything from halcyon at list price. Do a little shopping or at least negotiation to get better prices. If you can get a used backplate, do that. It is a big chunk of metal that isn't going to wear out any time soon. Feel free to separate BP and...
