One month solo travelling in Bali and beyond, tips+advice?

I haven't been to Jakarta myself but the rest of Java does have some notable attractions. Yogyakarta (known universally as "Jogja") is close to the ruined Hindu temples at Prambanan and the must-see Buddhist temples at Borobodur. There are also some very active volcanoes in that area that you...

Where can I find the "big stuff," the large pelagic fish in Indo

If I recall correctly hammerhead "season" at Layang Layang is March - May. Not even sure the resort is open all year round.

Komodo liveaboard - Moana or Black Manta?

I would second this. I've done a dozen or so liveaboards around the world and my Black Manta trip to Komodo last year was the best. It's a luxurious boat, not the most luxurious I've ever been on, but luxurious enough in the little details that matter. The diving operation is simply the best -...

    Komodo vs Raja Ampat

For the record. I saw a couple of wobbegongs in Komodo actually, as well as some Pygmy seahorses. Komodo dragons are awesome, as is the Komodo scenery. That said, I haven't been to RA yet and am very excited about my trip to Misool in March. At the end of the day I think this is basically...

Palau V Yap or Guam ?

I haven't been but based on others' reports I suspect Rangiroa and Fakirava are up there with Palau, if not better in terms of pelagics. Indonesia has pretty much the best reef diving in the world, though not hugely close to Japan (it's all relative though) and you need to go to very specific...

    Tulamben ... how?

I would reiterate that no matter how experienced you are as a diver, you are in all probability an amateur at spotting critters on Indonesian muck dives. I've lost count of the times at Lembeh and Tulamben when my guide has pointed at some apparent piece of fluff, rock or other detritus that I'd...

    Sachika Trip Report

For what it's worth I dived with Sachika in the central Atolls (N & S Male, N & S Ari) in August 2013. It was a fabulous trip and my experience mirrored everything the review above mentions (regardless of whether the poster has an agenda). Luxurious and spacious boat, great food, great crew...

Best value for live aboard in Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia/Philippines?

The best diving in SE Asia, arguably the world, is in Indonesia. Bali is good but if you're going to splurge anywhere, make it a Komodo liveaboard.

Where in Bali would be my home base?

Hi Beth, Couple of points. 1) taxis in Bali are v cheap 2) 4 day 3 night Liveaboard from Bali to Komodo will waste a lot of time travelling (if indeed such a thing exists). Labuan Bajo (nearest airport to Komodo) is an hour's flight away - if you're short of time it'd be better to fly...

    Raja vs North Sulawesi

Haven't been to Bangka or Raja Ampat yet, but have been to Bunaken, Lembeh and Komodo. Agree with everything said above. For convenience and price, N Sulawesi is hard to beat. Komodo is a bit more expensive and a bit harder to get to than N Sulawesi, but the diving is awesome. Hard to compare...

    Komodo vs Raja Ampat

You won't be disappointed by Black Manta - I dived Komodo with them last June and it was the best run liveaboard I've ever been on - not to mention the best diving I've ever done. (I may revise the latter opinion after Cenderawasih Bay in July or Misool next March though 😃) North...

Any Recommendations for a Honeymoon diving trip in Asia

I dived Komodo last June and the Maldives 6 weeks later. The currents in the Maldives were just as challenging as those in Komodo, actually more so in places. Maldives diving was great - lots of sharks, mantas, turtles etc, but Komodo coral is absolutely stunning and I actually had better manta...

Any Recommendations for a Honeymoon diving trip in Asia

I've booked this for my honeymoon a year from now. Both my fiancée and I love liveaboards, but not for our honeymoon. Misool diving gets rave reviews and the resort setting looks stunning. Apart from anything else it's very remote and off the beaten track - perfect to get away from it all.

Broad question: Going to Singapore for work, want to take a week diving - WHERE?!

Really? Having been to Bunaken twice my experience is that it resembles the most popular areas of Florida or the Caribbean - dozens and dozens of dive resorts nextdoor to each other and dozens of boats competing for space on a wall less than a mile long. Komodo in contrast is a very large area...

Planning on taking 1st trip to the South Pacific, help with destination

Bora Bora is nice. Staggeringly, mind blowingly expensive, but nice. The diving is frankly poor. I would think there are better places to aim for on a once in a lifetime dive trip. Papua New Guinea? Raja Ampat? Komodo?

    Scuba diving in second trimester

Would have to agree. I dived the GBR 13 years ago and the Yongala was, at the time, the best dive I'd ever done. 13 years on, based on a lot more diving in a lot better places, I wonder if it would still compare. The rest of the GBR was average back then when compared to the Florida Keys and the...

Bali - South East Corner - Dive Operator recommendations

Any thoughts on what these sea conditions will likely mean for Tulamben/Amed this weekend? Better yet, anyone there at the moment can report first hand? Thanks!

Broad question: Going to Singapore for work, want to take a week diving - WHERE?!

No probs. I think May is right at the end - if not after - the season for Raja Ampat, so most/all of the boats will already be in Komodo by then. This may well make your decision for you. Not sure about other resorts in RA but I know Misool Eco Resort closes around that time for the Summer...
