Are some signals just plain stupid?

That's an excellent point. Somebody should write that in a post somewhere.

How much air to surface with?

You did, and it's because you've got a problem with comprehension (or an inability to grasp reality). What you quoted was prompted by the discussion about whether or not breathing a tank dry will result in getting water in the tank, and is therefore based on the implicit assumption that the...

Georgia man dead - Key Largo, Florida

The information we have clearly isn't complete, since it doesn't include the cause of death. That means that we have no idea one way or the other if his death was caused by scuba diving. What we do know is that he put on his scuba gear and he got into the water on purpose, and he presumably...

    regulator hose leak

That bit about being just like a garden hose is a nice theory, but there are three significant differences. 1. It's extremely unlikely that your garden hose is supplying water at 140 psi over ambient. 2. Your garden hose is probably softer and more flexible than a regulator hose. 3. At any...

    Skipper charged in diver death

You're 100% right. Maybe that's why the jury convicted the guy who was responsible for supplying an air compressor that wasn't suitable for diving. The article doesn't say, but since the guy who supplied the compressor also owned the boat I'm guessing the two weren't equal partners, either.

Finished my pool portion but not going to do OW can I still get any kind of cert?

At the place you went to? I wouldn't be surprised if they do. If somebody fails and tells their friend then the friend might go elsewhere (a very fortunate thing from the sounds of it), and the boss will be upset about losing the cost of the class and the thousands they expect all the graduates...

Selfie sticks - for selfish selfholes?

No word about using a selfie stick, but here's some food for thought: http://nymag.com/thecut/2015/09/selfies-kill-more-people-than-sharks.html

    DIY PLB Dive Canister Critique

2 1/2 inch galvanized pipe has an ID that's very close to 2 1/2", so a 4" nipple with a cap on each end would meet several of the criteria. It's not outrageously bulky, it should be about 1.5 lbs negative, and it should easily work to a few hundred fsw if the caps are tight enough. Of course...

Very near miss - panic and hyperventilation at 70 feet

I'm trying to understand the reasoning there. Do you know how much the air in a 120 weighs, and how that affects your buoyancy at the end of the dive? Just because it wasn't one of the things that bit you in the ass doesn't mean it wasn't a significant error in judgment. Nobody is immune to...

How do you know if a dive instructor/shop is reputable and safe?

Sounds a lot like sour grapes to me. I'm not entirely clear on who's who, but are locations A & B both run by company X? If so I'd expect them to be somewhat similar, and it would also explain why Joe wouldn't want people to know what he's saying. If he has no professional relationship with B...

DCI and hyperbaric chamber experience Cozumel

That's what I'd bet on. Call it an even 4ATA at her max depth, and 2.67 ATA at 55'. Based on the theory that you can reduce ambient pressure by 50% without bubbling she shouldn't have experienced DCS that deep even if she was well into deco at 96'. It's a bit like the cliche about being...

    Malta Extradition

We've got something a bit similar here, called no-fault insurance, but it only applies to auto accidents and doesn't affect liability for damages other than medical bills and lost income. What we also have, but I gather you don't, is the ability to be compensated for other financial losses that...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

Maybe somebody should sit the DM down and explain what a customer is. It sounds to me like you're the self-centered one who thinks the dive was all about what you wanted. You had one plan and they had another. That's frequently how it works when strangers get on the same dive boat. If you want...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

That seems to put you in the minority, at least among vacationing divers, but you've got good company, IMHO. Central's entire premise (and dissatisfaction) seems to be based on the idea that covering a lot of ground is inherently better than going slow and looking closely. That does seem to be...

How much air to surface with?

I can think of others, but that's one reason not to descend again if your tank is empty. If you don't descend after the tank stops delivering air the only way tank pressure will be lower than the water pressure is if you give the tank a really good squeeze and it pops back into shape.

    Rude Divers on the Boat

You've got it completely backwards. A diver who doesn't want to do what the majority of the group wants to do should go with a different group. Feel free to blame the dive op if they promised you one thing and then delivered another by accommodating the majority of the group, but the real blame...

How much air to surface with?

Thanks for covering that, because I was getting very confused about how water will get into my empty tank that actually has 140 psi and a first stage that's firmly closed. Of course I'm still puzzled about what's going to open the 2nd stage to let water in, since (as I understand it) that...

    Malta Extradition

AFAIK, that's pretty standard throughout the US. If something you do as part of a government job (not sure about the private sector) isn't a crime based on an acquittal then the employer covers the cost of your defense. There will be some exceptions, but an acquittal generally means you were...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

As far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with the sticks themselves, but, as with so many other things, it depends on who's using it and what they're doing with it. I haven't encountered it yet, but I've heard plenty of stories about clueless and inconsiderate people who use the extra reach...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

In some situations being passive aggressive sounds to me like twice as much work as the situation calls for. Or not, depending on what they look like. I figured out a long time ago that I'm seldom required to look at things if I don't want to, so I really don't understand why so many people...
