    Tables vs Computers

    You forgot one. What about the use of software to plan your dives, cut the tables, then go diving. As for me, I use the my dive computer to plan the repetitive dives for the max depth. I have the tables for a backup, but you can certainly exceed the table NDL as Walter has stated.

    **Split Fins – Let the Bashing Begin!**

    Geez, I didn't know that you could use a fin on either foot. Here I thought that the problem was the current.I always have trouble identifying on which foot to put them and worry about the consequences. I must have my mask strap too tight around my forehead. Thank you ScubaBoard for...

    Thoughts on Training, Panic, and Hazing

    As someone who was also in the military I can offer a different take on this. I speak from the perspective of a flight instructor and specifically to using the full motion simulator. There are certain things we cannot do in an aircraft because they either cannot be simulated or have a high...

    A Diver's Responsibility to his family....

    Peter, I don't think that we have any more or less responsibility to our family as divers as we would if we were participating in any other "high risk" activity such as climbing. If we dive within the limits of our training, follow the procedures that we have been taught, and maintain our...

    PADI vs SDI

    Post this in the GUE forum and wait for the flames. There is a big difference between using software to plan dives and diving with a dive computer. The folks that use the deco software, as I understand it, cut TABLES that are used during the dive. Sure they use a bottom timer, but the plan...

    PADI vs SDI

    Time to jump in cuz I simply cannot accept this as being unique to a particular training agency. That is a good thing, but is it a reflection of the agency, or the instructors approach? A sample size of a couple of courses is hardly statistically valid. I have seen the same thing in a course run...

    How old do you go?

    Men are obligated to grow old. They are not obligated to grow up.

    Been diving forever or started late?

    Sorry to jump in a bit early. I am T- 6 months to 50. Started diving in late 2001. My wife and kids gave me a OW course as a birthday present. The kids not regret it a bit. As for my wife - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. The only problem is that I have less money for photo gear seeing as...

    Cozumel = "hell on earth?!"

    And so we have other opinions.:11: Some of those opinions are favourable, some are not. Scubaboard is the place to express your opinion, especially if the OP is asking for it. This is getting to be almost like "my reg is better than yours" or similar discussion. I just wish someone would...

    Cozumel = "hell on earth?!"

    I did one dive trip to Coz a few years ago. The reef was a busy place. The boat was full. The people were nice. The food as average at the AI resort, and not exceptional when we went downtown. All in all it was far from "hell on earth," but in comparison to other places we have visited...

    tank VIS and my health

    It sounds like there is more to the story. If your regs are not working to your satisfaction it should not be a problem to take them back to the LDS who did the servicing. As for your tank, take it to another LDS and have the vis done again. See what they tell you and compare it to what you...

    1st trip to Bonaire - What to bring and what to leave at home?

    Here is my take to add to the others. Sorry for any duplication. One pair of "nice" pants to wear during the night before departure meal. Similarly, one "nice" shirt (you know, the type with the palm trees on it). A pair of pants that allow you to remove the bottom of the legs to turn them...

    Cattle Boat, what does that mean to you?

    I believe that it has more to do with the attitude and approach the crew take than the number of people on the boat. If you travel to resort areas, then you may have limited access to exactly what you want for boat dives (unless you charter the boat yourself). Where we routinely dive off of...

    Reusing Desiccant Packs

    I did read the thread. Note that I said I don't mean to sound harsh. Seems you took it that way. I too reuse them, but if in doubt, I replace them. I don't know what happened with yours, but I have not had a problem like that where the darn things were finished after a day, even in humid...

    Reusing Desiccant Packs

    Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh. If you are not sure or don't really trust any method to reuse the dessicant packs, just buy some new ones. In a simple search I found this for just $6.50 and this for $4.95 (plus shipping and taxes). Compared to other costs for scuba, this is very low. I am...
